How to switch from AMD to NVIDIA

Hey everyone,

I bought the new asus gtx 780 since they dropped the price and came with 3 free games.  I am using a xfx 6950 as of now.  I shouldn't have any problems with my system and compatibility with my new card and I have enough power for it.  I just want to know what is the best way to completely uninstall the amd drivers and install my new nvidia drivers.  Thanks for the help!

P.S. If you could post a step by step process that would be super cool!

If you're using windows (you didn't say), it should be as simple as uninstalling it from the control panel, shutting the system down, installing the new card, then installing the new drivers after first boot. You'll then have to reboot once more and then you'll be able to enjoy your new card.

Or there's always the possibility that you'll have to reinstall windows entirely.

Uninstall them from the control panel, download Driver Sweeper and restart your PC into safe-mode, once there, run Driver Sweeper and make sure to delete all the remaining AMD driver files, restart to normal mode and install the latest Nvidia driver.

If using windows:

1.  Burn Debian USB

2. Uninstall AMD GPU from mobo

3. Install nVidia GPU to mobo

4. Overwrite the drive with windows from the Debian USB

5. Install Debian

Now you have an OS that can go anywhere and is not tied to any hardware. I swap out winblows drive from PC to other PC, must reinstall winblows. You add any hardware, must reinstall winblows.

One way UNIX based OSes are better because they can be on any computer with any CPU architecture. Even OS X.

If using UNIX based system:

1. Uninstall AMD GPU from mobo

2. Install nVidia GPU to mobo

3. Update driver, if you have a mac you can find kernel extensions on shady websites

If using an apple PC, add this step to the end of the guide:

Flash your card to an EFI ROM if you want to see bootscreen, get full PCIe 2.x speed, be able to select what to boot from, and/or have GPU seen as something other as than 7xx series GPU.

If using OS X, add this step to the end of the guide:

Install the illicit KEXTs before the GPU, without the kernel extensions you just get a black screen and a potentially fried card due to the fan shutting down

Why would someone purposely install that malware?

If you want a simpler approach, try using this application from the GeForce Drivers forum:

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/550192/geforce-drivers/display-driver-uninstaller-ddu-v9-2-released-10-31-13-/

It's not an 'official' Nvidia tool, but I've used it to clean uninstall drivers and it works very nicely.  Pretty sure it supports AMD driver removal as well.

I wasn't recommending Windurrz.

Just so people realize, the shitty driver situation that happens when you change GPU vendors is not the fault of AMD or Nvidia. It's because Windows sucks ass at drivers.

With Linux, you can literally rip your AMD out of the computer while it's running, pop in your Nvidia, and it'll just figure it out without so much as a reboot (not that I would recommend testing this, Linux probably supports it better than the hardware itself). You won't even have to install a driver, because the open source AMD and Nvidia drivers are built right into the kernel.
