Hi guys, so my laptops windows explorer became corrupted so now I can't shut down without manually shutting down by holding down the power button (no reset button). I know that you can screw up a HDD by doing this so is there any way to do it without potentially harming the HDD? This HDD also works as my boot drive so if this goes, i'm screwed.
just hit it a few times it should go into a shut down process instedof just shutting it off ( the power button lol)
Ive done this on my PC so many times before and nothing happened, plus im pretty sure laptop hearddrives just park the heads when power is lost where desktop HDD's will destroy themselves most of the time.
I'll take the risk :( I'm scared of having it die on me then having to get a new hdd and copy of windows.
you won't damage your hdd at all. i've done it dozens of times. the worst you can get is a dirty volume, wheich a disk check will take care of
I've messed one up doing this, but it turned out to be the manufacturers fault. The (awful) customer service rep told me that the hard drive was bad and offered to fix it, never happened, got it back with reports of "water damage." Never buying Toshiba products again.
yeah, i've done it desktop and laptop, even had a power cuttout on a desktop, no problems afterwards, 'cept a dirty volume once, easily fixed by dskchk
yeah thats your problem is you bought tosheba BAD IDEA
Alright, thanks for the help, gonna try and fix this windows explorer.
That was an old laptop, the one I have currently is an HP.
I love Toshiba laptops, solid and dependable as long as you do not buy one off QVC, those are usully factory seconds and will usualy fail in a year because they are reconditioned wrong....
I bought it from Walmart lol, it broke in a year, I did install a lot of bs onto it though. The problem for me was the customer service, they promised to replace the HDD but then returned it claiming it was damaged by water, which it wasn't.
HDD turned out fine. Wasn't a virus, just Windows 7 proving how much it sucks.
Oh yeah bro, just take the top off of the HDD, it'll be fine.
Just kidding. Don't. When your HDD dies, go ahead and do it. My reader head bent and I just took the top off and fucked with it a bit as it was completely dead. Pretty cool to have as a "trophy?.
Just pop in a windows 7 dvd ( Make sure its the same version as the one you are running 64bit or 32bit) choose system repair follow the instructions and you should be able to shut down agian. HP usually calls it an Installation media disk or other such nonsense. Otherwise download an ISO image of the windows 7 burn it to disk and use that.
A couple of gigs of music gone due to life. I won't be sad when looking at it.
I don't have the disk, it was preinstalled in the laptop.
