How to make my old HD/dvds work?

I have an LG/GGC-H20L Multi Blu-Ray Drive  which plays HD/DVDs.

I came with cyberlink power dvd 9 which played both blu-rays and HD/dvd's.  I have a good collection for both blu-rays and HD/dvds,  well I tried to play my hd/dvd's today and nothing it said I needed an update so it started the update and it went to Power DVD 10 but wait, when I tried to play a blu-ray and or a HD/dvd it said I needed an update? So again I did the update now I have Power DVD 11 and it will play my Blu-Rays but not like they used to? also it won't play my hd/dvd's any more.

If someone could help me out with a work around to go back to power dvd 9? or is there a driver or codex I need and if so how and where can I find it?  Cyberlink is only telling me to upgrade to Power DVD 14 ultra edition. But they won't say if my HD/dvds will play or not, and LG hasn't responded to my messages yet?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

this is what I'm have running my system

i7 950 @ 3.6ghz

GTX 680

12gb corsair 1600mhz

2x Adata ssd's 500gb

just use VLC

I tried to use my vlc player even downloaded a different on than I already had?  I don't have the right codex? Is there a VLC player you suggest?

you have to install 2 files. here is a link on how to.

I've been running through my blu rays and DVDs. I use makemkv to get them on HDD then vlc can play that file directly or you can transcoded to mp4 with handbrake for smaller file size. Beware, a blue ray on HDD will be 20-40GB

@eastexas, I tried and followed the instructions that is in the link but still can't get my hd/dvd's to play? blu-rays fine but is there a different codex for hd/dvd formats? I have a good collection of movies thanks to my hd/dvd and on for my 360 and when blu-ray won the war, well you could pick up movies for like 3 dollars lol.  My power dvd 9 by cyberlink was the only thing that allowed me to play my hd/dvds but now I can't get it to work. It keeps wanting me to upgrade to play those movies but it was playing them before so why do I need to upgrade now ? thanks for the help.

@rockking, can I use makemkv to rip my hd/dvd's to my computer? and watch them that way? Thanks for the help.

take rockking suggestion. save yourself troubles in the long run. you could try to uninstall your previous player and reinstall but I would just rip them. the media companies are their own worst enemies.

yeah, so makemkv will make an mkv file from the dvd and vlc can play that on its own. i use handbrake and compress them because a typical blu ray goes from 25GB to 3GB. and dvds go from 7GB to <1GB. each to their own. as for if hd/dvds will work, not sure. if you have an hd/dvd reading drive it shouldn't be an issue.
