How to fix a disk error on external hard drive

Hello,

I have an external hard drive that is formatted with ext4. It has a lot of important files on it and my computer was forcefully shut down by me kicking the power cord accidentally. When I powered it back on there is a disk error when trying to mount my external hard drive. It recognizes the hard drive is there but cannot mount.

Is there a way to scan and fix the hard drive on linux?

I am running on arch linux.

Is there an error message in dmesg or syslog?

Any odd reports there when you connect the (presumably USB) drive to another port?

Start by downloading smartmon tools and show the output of smartctl on that particular drive. I assume you have run fsck on the drive?
