I saw the answer to this problem in a forum post on a different site, so I figured that I would put the whole process into one blog post for everyone to be able to see since I see this question fairly often. Now, since I used a Mac, this guide is based on using a Mac, which I know that very few of you use, but keep in mind that the overall process may be same except for a couple of parts.
Process:
- The first step is to grab the audio from the video itself. This is a rather simple process. Find the video and copy the link. Paste this link into a site that converts YouTube videos into MP3s. I used www.vidtomp3.com, but any other site will work as long as you get a downloadable MP3. SOME SITES HAVE LENGTH LIMITS. I will also advise you to not use www.video2mp3.net because last time I used it, I had to force shut down my computer.
-
MAC: The downloaded MP3 opens up iTunes automatically (at least for me) and puts the file in the Music section, go to step 3 (or continue to the Windows portion if this did not happen)
WINDOWS: Since I did not use Windows, I'm doing a little bit of guessing here. If this portion is incorrect, please let me know in the comments section so I can correct this.
The file will go into your Downloads folder by default. If you used a different folder for the file, make note of where the file is located. Open iTunes, click "File", then click "Add to Library", although this could be "Import..." on the Windows version. Locate where your file is and select it. This will place the MP3 in the music section. -
This is where the guide may differ from OS X to Windows. I will be describing the process on OS X. I'm assuming that the process on Windows is the same for the most part. Let me know if there is any change on Windows so that I can update this guide
Right click the file and select "Get Info". The first tab open is the Details tab. Here you see all of your basic information. Click the "Options" tab and change "Media kind" from music to podcast, and check "Remember playback position" if it is not already. Go back to "Details" and fill in all of the information that you can, it's not important that you fill in everything. If you want to just do what I did, I put in the title, for author I said "Tek Syndicate", and for podcast I said "The Tek", everything else I left untouched. Make sure to keep all of this consistent (other than the title, obviously) as you add more episodes so that all of them go under one category and you don't end up with multiple folders as you add more episodes. For artwork I pulled the rectangular picture of the video art from the top of the TekSyndicate home page. The square version pixelates and cuts off portions of "The Tek". Click "Artwork", click "Add Artwork", find the photo, and select it. - Sync the podcasts with your device then voila, The Tek is now in your Podcasts app.
Any suggestions or needed aids (ex: screenshots), please let me know in the comments. I did have an Android phone at one point and added podcasts to it, but the process is very different and does not require a computer. I can do a guide on that as well if asked.
