The first time I loaded up the game, I really didn’t know what to do or expect, but after a while I saw little notifications telling me that to open a book and that helped explain to me a few of the details I was missing, such as how to build a shelter and fire. I messed around for a while trying to kill animals for food and cutting down trees for a shelter, until I had the urge to go explore. Not more than 5 seconds into the forest from where I had started, I noticed those crazy tribal people that you see in the trailers. They were all surrounding something and munching on it. I tried to get a bit closer until they noticed me. This is when the whole horror part of the game started to kick in for me. They split up a bit and some jumped into the trees… I realized they could hide in the trees which made them hard to detect. Then one started to come toward me so I went after him. Only then did I realize several others came from behind. After a somewhat pathetic fight on my part, my health dropped all the way and I died, or so I thought.
I found myself in a cave with a bunch of dead people and needed my lighter to see anything. I treaded extremely softly for fear that the crazy tribal people were in there with me since they clearly dragged me in there. After a little while I found some supplies and realized I was by myself. I then slowly was sneaking around, since I wasn’t sure if I would continue to stay alone, to get out and found a glitch where I ended up falling through the world and truly died.
I started again, but with more of a search for vengeance against these creepy tribal people. This time, I spawned with the plane in a new location, but the tribal people were right there jumping around and threatening me. I found that they seemingly work together. One will try to distract you while another will sneak up from the back to attack you. Through my clever use of exploiting glitches I found, I was able to kill all seven of them that surrounded me. I proceeded to go exploring, nearly running into a few because they make no noise until they are attacking you. This left me extremely paranoid and constantly looking around. I ended up finding a beach and a half sunken sailboat. I then explored a cliff above the boat since it had a cool tree. It was getting dark at this point and I was surprised I didn’t see any tribals for a while. I was looking at another glitch (a bird sitting in the air instead of the branch about 2 feet above its head) when I noticed a tribal staring at me from about 25 feet away. I was about to fight him, when I saw another one coming. I decided I would try to get back to the boat by going down the cliff, but as I was trying to jump to safety, they came at me and I panicked and fell hurting myself severely. I found myself in the cave again. I proceeded to gather the supplies (which was mostly different from the time before), and sneak out of the place. While I did not see any of them while getting out of the cave, I was genuinely afraid they would come out of nowhere and kill me. I found myself back near the plane and saw more tribals and just quit. The ambiance and the freakiness of the tribals had got to me.
As I am writing this, I want to play again to try out more things and record them, but I just feel the anxiety about it because it genuinely freaky. It truly affects the psyche. So I applaud Endnight Games because I almost never get freaked out by games (other than a well placed jump scare).
