so i have my build all planned out and i want to know what how much power i will need the components are as follow.
AMD FX8350- 125W
MSI Radeon 7870 2GB CrossfireX-unknown wattage.
Rosewill BLackhawk with 5 fans- Unknown
G.Skill Ripjaws x-series 16GB- 1.5V (that might not have to do with anything)
Seagate Baracuda 1TB 7200RPM- Unknown
LG Blue Ray Drive- Unknown
MSI 970A motherboard-Uknown.
No overclocking.
so obviously there are a lot of unkowns and im having trouble figuring out which of these components have a large effect on my wattage. Right now im planning on 750W but i would like to know how to calculate this or just how mch you guys think i need.
Logan should seriously do a PSU wattage tutorial. This is the 3rd time I've given advice on PSU wattage.
1) First off go here: www.pcpartpicker.com
2) If you're not OC'ing stock wattage for your common parts is:
CPU 100w
MB 100-150w
HDD 10w
SSD 5w
Ram 5w per stick
optical 5w
fan 5w each
video 150-250w
3) Add those up and at least times it by 1.5 even if your not OC'ing if you do not have enough power things will go wrong.
4) General rule of thumb is double it and add 100 to keep it safe. I always buy for future if at one point you want to OC and stuff or maybe a crossfire or sli in the future you're ready to do that.
Long story short if you don't want to read all that is about 800w and that leaves you with lots of room. You build is under a grand and it looks really sweet if I must say. Wishing I had a grand laying around this is what I would do with it.
I would recommend running around 750W, it could get by on less in most situations, but it is a good idea to go ahead and plan for the worst. AMD also will usually give you a recommendation for what wattage to run for a crossfire setup.
