Whenever I hear something about windows 10, it's about someone getting pissed off that something is broken or they liked 7 more and got forced. When will Microsoft get to the point where people stop using windows because they've pissed off too many customers?
Will take a bit. Old habits die hard I guess.
I suppose Linux use rises until the end of the year to 5 to 10%
They didn't break anything. people are just trying to find a reason to be mad even though they agreed to the EULA.
The anniversary update added features and that was it, didn't mess with your privacy settings and left the system alone for the most part with the exeception of Cortana.
As for Linux taking over on the desktop, yeah sorry to give you the vietnam flashbacks, but that's never going to happen as long as GNU / Linux is fragmented.
Seeing as this has been Microsoft's plan for a long time now, and they have invested a lot of money into making things operate this way. I don't see anything changing for a while. They have already said that this is the last "version" of Windows. It's going to follow a consistent update cycle from now on. So many people agreed to have this type of thing happen on their systems, it's honestly not Microsofts fault. People are just not liking what they are seeing.
It's going to be difficult for Linux to really take off, there are two things that need to happen for it to work. The first being linux needs to come preinstalled on more machines, especially gaming machines. Places that sell higher end machines need to offer linux as an option.
Secondly people need to be educated on the fact that there are other options. You can ask 100 people off the street what linux is and you will probably get zero correct answers. There needs to be more marketing behind it, somebody like Canonical needs to start a rigorous advertising campaign, come up with some clever ads to show people that it's an option.
Part of the problem is MS holds the market so companies don't want to support Linux, Also in a way Linux has been widely adopted. Do you use android?
You really need a company (like google) to refine a Linux distro (like Android) a little better and put it on device like PC's and Laptops before people will adopt Linux more openly. But that is time, money and not alot of profit,
Linux will never be more than 2-5% of market share. Bitch about it all you want, it's just never gonna happen. Come at me with whatever argument or insult you want but that won't change reality. As someone who teaches on a major university campus, trust me when I say that the Tek Syndicate is slowly becoming a "safe space" for techies and some of the people here are surrounding themselves with like-minded drones. If you disgree with them they flip their shit; unable to handle the fact that someone may have a differing opinion (MS v. Apple v. Linux, ASUS v. HP, Intel v. AMD, etc).
Does MS and their heavy-handed Windows 10 updates suck? Yes! Was it annoying as fuck that I had to uninstall a bunch of MS apps that I had already uninstalled? You betcha! But guess what? I don't need 15 threads to tell me that. I simply spent 15 minutes uninstalling MS bloatware and then moved on with my life.
This is the correct answer Linux will not be widespread because people on average are not tech savvy. witch means the majority of people will not put enough effort into learning their system for Linux to be viable. I mean if you think about it most people that buy the nexus phone don't even understand that its unlocked. they just buy it because its "Cool".
Thus a big company will need to make a Linux GUI that is more user friendly than windows and out of the box ready to go with little customization needed. witch cant really happen unless other company's support Linux first, honestly your best bet at wide spread Linux is steam OS, if people use steam OS it will most likely evolve over time into something more of a desktop that's geared at gaming rather than a gaming platform that has desktop features
Another problem would be getting people to go to Linux if they hate Windows. Why would they not just go to Apple. For a computer user who does not know a lot about a computer, they might be intimidated by the task of using Linux and picking hardware and etc.
They need a big manufacturer like Dell to start shipping more PC's with linux.
Also, even the desktop environment & software people use at work today is becoming more mobile / tablet orientated. The classical notion of owning a big 'bulky' PC with a printer attached is definitely not something most people are likely to return to after the PSU in there old box dies. Mostly they will buy a tablet or chromebook ( which is Linux of course ) and run cloud apps and storage along with social media. Gaming is covered well by 3 brands of consoles and two brands of smart devices ( Andriod / iOS gaming )
The PC fits into this landscape only by virtue of an established user base for gaming on windows and id imagine a large amount of people probably have pre-built gaming PC's or Mid range gaming laptops supplied with windows ( steam stats confirm ). So Linux gaming is a 'growing' niche within a niche within a niche.
Sarcasm overload!
They ship linux based PC's. It's just no one cares.
They need more marketing along with it. You need both.
Microsoft can do anything short of bending it's consumers over a table with a greased up gear shift and linux would still not become mainstream.
The general consumer is too complacent/ignorant to understand what's acceptable behavior for a company and Microsoft understands this. Because of this, Microsoft can do basically whatever they want and the average person will keep drinking the kool aid.
Linux will take over if Microsoft goes ahead and makes everything on Windows break, all program compatibility will need to implode and cease to exist, and then Linux would only take over in its OS X counterpart. @gasbaggeezer thank fuck someone said that shit outright, plus-fucking-1 internet point for you
Nah Linux might take over but in the form of chrome OS.
It would be just like phones and web servers were people never understand what Linux is.
If microsoft really started to mess things up and drive people away most regular users would just move to osx, ios and android for their primary computing. Maybe desktop linux would get a couple percent boost in marketshare.
I have written a few posts a while ago talking about the challenges for linux to be a widely adopted OS for particularly the mainstream population.
The irony I suppose is that on mobile devices whether it is Android or IOS most of the people are using *Nix based operating systems regardless of what their personal comfort level with Linux might be.
But the apprehension remains the same with a lot of people when the word 'Linux' presents itself. Colleges tend to do a better job of trying to adapt students to Linux from the outset especially in schools such as computer science but once again often other schools such as management or law etc will opt for Windows and the students will simply adapt to that.
This then runs into the workforce as well where the majority of companies you might work for have a Windows based front-end so client desktops on the network will virtually all be Windows machines and these are serviced for larger offices by huge corporations such as HP or Dell or IBM / Lenovo who provide those machines. This however is not necessarily to say that the network which those windows desktops sit on is always windows server either, some are on Linux or Unix based servers and all the back-end stuff is handled by *Nix but working with it is reserved for the IT engineers and not the general staff in other parts of the organization.
Additionally if you go to any store to purchase a computer you will find an absence of any Linux desktops or laptops sold, just another strong reason why the mainstream population have difficulty in realizing that Linux is a true competitor or alternative to Windows. Virtually all the PC gear sold at stores from vendors is Windows based and that also depends greatly on vendor support so HP or Dell etc will sell pre-made machines which a lot of people buy from stores and those also come with Microsoft support for windows. So in a lot of ways their all in bed with each other to support the Windows ecosystem.
Microsofts genius was never in its technology, it was and has always been a marketing company. The idea that fuels having Windows installed on every computer still drives that companies core belief system, the only marketing competitor who threw a spanner into that process was Apple who based their OS on *Nix but presented it as a Windows alternative in the Mac OS.
Linux compared to both Windows and Mac in this sense is not a operating system driven by marketing initiatives it is instead driven by a true desire to perfect computing. However the issue all linux distros face is fragmentation. You cannot just say linux anymore there is too many flavors of linux all of which offer something good but the lack of standardization makes it immensely difficult for mainstream adoption and also presents challenges for software developers to create products or drivers or whatever that will holistically just work on any linux based device.
In many cases the software or app store process has improved a lot for linux but one of the main areas of friction in the past for many users was the fact that for Linux you had to build the apps you wanted from scratch at one point to even install linux you had to compile the kernel yourself.. It is stuff like this that oriented the operating system towards the more hardcore user rather than the mainstream pc user and as a result of the initial challenge in using Linux and also the sheer fragmentation that was presented in multiple linux distros it just never caught on with the public.
Linux is very strong in networking, and also developers in many software companies will use linux, Hollywood uses linux for most of their video production software from what I understand, production, manufacturing, heavy industries etc all use linux based proprietary software for operating most of their machinery. So it is not like linux is overwhelmed at all by Windows in fact in most cases despite the lack of blatent marketing linux is probably more widely used and on more devices than Windows could ever aim to be on, but again when presented to a mainstream user and due to a sheer lack of consistency and adequate marketing, linux does not present itself like Windows.
You hear everyone sell Windows 10, talk about Windows 10 blah blah blah... For once just once would it not be nice to see Linux features promoted as heavily ?
But whilst companies wont individually be responsible for the task of promoting linux to the mainstream as a user you can increase awareness of it to those you know, and if you have more knowledge you can educate your communities about it too. Remember also that poorer countries thrive of linux because its free and open source and enables a lot of people to get access to computing where they might have not otherwise had it.
Widespread adaption requires centralised distribution and marketing. Linux has neither.
Idealist companies don't have the resources to do it. Companies with the resources to do this would add data collection anyway because why not increase profit ?
Unless Microsoft murders your family i don't see it happening.
