How do I know if my gpu overclock is working (Radeon Hd 7950)

Hi all! I bought a (used>) 7950 a while ago when I built a budget x99 system(lol). I wanted the extra CPU cores for cpu intensive stuff, but I don't typically play graphically demanding games. That being said, my friends have gotten back into playing diablo 3, and I'm going along for the ride. at 4k (40") I'm getting just over 50fps, and a lot of motion sickness that I never used to get at 1440p 60fps(27") so I thought I may be able to squeeze out an additional 5-6 fps from an OC. It seems however that the settings I put into either the AMD overdrive menu itself, or the MSI afterburner program aren't actually taking effect. Furmark gets no extra FPS, and the core clock indicator stays pegged at 900.

Lol: something appears to be working now, when I press start on furmark, my PC crashes. Possibly a power delivery issue, my power supply is a corsair 850 but it seems to suck.

When I bought the card, the guy said it had a custom BIOS for overvolting, So apparently he was able to push it pretty hard. No idea how to utilize the overvolting capability though, if anyone is experienced with this, help would be greatly appreciateds.

Thanks!
Andrew

Hey, Andrew. I'm Peter :)
What exactly is the card model? What is the PSU model? Keep in mind, the entire system power consumption should rarely exceed 400W... And you are talking about 850W psu...
What temperaturea is the GPU holding? Etc...

Update: I rolled back from the current beta drivers to the previous stable (16.3.2) It was super effective!

Its a gigabyte windforce hd7950 (with the 3 fans) PSU: corsair ax850 modular. But it is a recertified, and the computer won't power on unless I flip the psu switch off and on rapidly, so there are some gremlins in there for sure. But yeah, most of the time the PSU fan isn't even on its under so little load.

With the 16.3.2 drivers, both overclocks and underclocks are working, I'm currently sitting at 51c at 1100Mhz at 100% load. I feel like I could go farthur but I am out of slider in amd overdrive. Should I switch to MSI Afterburner?

Also Wow quick response!. thanks @psycho_666

Edit: The VDDC is reading at 1.09V right now, is that stock?

Wow, my 270X draws 1,2 V and I have undervolted it :D Oh well...
Look, 7950 is basically 280, that is a step under 380... You may be able to overclock this thing even more, the Gigabyte cooler with the three fans is both really good and really quiet, and you have enough power in the PSU...
However I am not sure the gpu itself can do what you ask from it...
Just lower the settings or go 1080p... It will be perfect scaling 4 pixels will play as 1 pixel and you will have super sharp image.
Otherwise you can try Afterburner. Test this thing with Furman and firestrike for atleast 30 minutes. Take your time. You don't want to destroy your GPU, because you speed tested and the gpu was not able to hold that clock for long...

I see how many FPS this 200Mhz overclock got me. Thats a 22% overclock I suppose. I only needed 20% more FPS, So I might be there already.

It's not perfect 1 by 1 scaling... There are many factors, that influence performance, other than the frequency. Also you may want to try and push the Vram speed a little bit. The cooler touches the memory chips, so they have good cooling. That may push the performance to where you need it to be.

I reverted to stock clocks, to try and do a benchmark run in D3 to see what my FPS is, and the game won't run. Neither will furmark in "burn-in test" mode. As soon as I press the button, my computer turns off. Its actually hilariously instant. That's why I'm suspecting the power supply; I'm theorizing it can put out power just fine, but it can't deal with the surge. Kombustor runs fine, and stresses GPU at 100%, but it kindof leads into that gently.

I have also tried starting FurMark with kombustor already running, and tried the same thing with D3, but no luck. I'm getting tired of typing in my windows password.

Can you borrow a psu from a friend to test the Corsair PSUs are crap theory?

Budget x99 build........WAAAAAT.......?

Lol yep. 5820k, used GPU, second hand case, refurbished PSU, refurbished 3TB drives.

You'll know when Gotta Go Fast starts playing from your speakers and your wallpaper is changed to Sanic.

Update: I got diablo to run by unplugging my 4k monitor, and starting it on my 1440p monitor. It is now running at 4k at 68 fps.

Oddly, the game thinks its running at 800x600. This is of course, a huge lie. Unless I'm a huge idiot and can't tell the difference between 800x600 and 4k.

So today I crashed 3 times while playing LoL, (with no overclock) which isn't a very graphics demanding game (fps locked to 60, 7950 is capable of over 300 fps in LoL)

So either my power supply is getting worse, or somehow I fried my GPU in a way that displays no symptoms in regular desktop use, but immediately crashes when subjected to load.

I did notice that if I do an MSI kombustor test, if I pick one of the memory burner settings, it immediately crashes. is my GPU memory bad? Is that a thing that happens?
