affix strap to wrist in manner indicated within the instructions, usually this is as obvious as a loop of metal-mesh fabric with some velcro to keep it on a wrist or ankle or something. Clip the other end to something large and metal, or plug it into the ground wire of your friendly neighborhood wall outlet. I know in some cases they will actually come with a little rod that is specially sized so that it won't fit in the other slots to prevent you from getting a shock. I say this because the round hole on the wall outlet is the ground wire, which has to be routed to the main ground, which is usually a pretty heavy guage wire stuffed really far into the ground. Or sometimes it goes to the power booster box and is grounded there. Basically those just let you keep working steadily without having to stop every few moments and touch your case or something.
so if i clip the aligator end to the case and have it on my wrist i'll be fine? does it matter if the case is painted black? (it's not plain metal)
Just touch the side of the case... a metal part. You'll be fine. Wrist straps were useful in my day when motherboard didn't contain all of the anti static components they do today. Just a heads up
it has to be on bare metal, painted metal does not conduct electricity
when you think "touching the case" that's with you're power supply screwed in and pluged into the wallÂ
Clip the alligator clip to the case, or another piece of metal somewhere, and make sure you have the wrist wrap around your wrist, or your ankle, You dont NEED an esd wristband, I sure as heck dont have one, but they're nice to have as a precaution.
so i plugg in the power supply once it's in the case? then i continously touch the case?
