I'm trying to get into computer networking and security for college. I know some of the jobs and terms around the field, but I don't know how to go about getting into it. Specifically, I'd like to get into Penetration Testing or any job revolving around analyzing malware, viruses, etc.
Do you guys know any good material that will help me with what I'm trying to get into?
Hey Digbick,
I am going to toss in my two cents here.
Computer Networking and security for college depending on where you are is going to take 4 years and then you will be seeking an entry level job. I would say that it would be a good idea to study for Security+ and/or Network+ from CompTIA and this should be enough information to get at least a paid internship depending where you are. This will be where you really start learning via full immersion. It is within my philosophy that it is best to learn how something works and then learn how to break / fix it. Penetration testing and analyzing malware will come later in your career as you will most likely need 5-10 years experience prior to getting your dream job.
I am interested in sort of the same things and I am currently working as a jr. sysadmin where I practice security and other network technology, feel free to AMA.

Most colleges (like the one I'm taking for network security) has an internship as part of the degree (usally later in the course).
Dont take my word for it though, there are WAY more knowledgeable people here than me.
