How an external Hard drive works

when you connect an external hard drive to your tv is it the tv that can read the information stored in the hard drive?

Ok :D

A few questions here, first what components actually exists within an external hard drive?

When i connect an external hard drive to my TV, is it the TV that reads the information on the hard disk or is the hard disk that reads the information and gives it to the TV (after the TV gives a command to the hard disk, to for example show movie x).

Could it be possible, and if so what parts do i need?, to connect my TV (it does not have ethernet connection) to the internet by an external component (very small, like a USB) that can connect to a NAS server or something along those lines. Would it then be possible for the TV to read the information from this server? Adding nothing more to the TV than the internet connection?

Thank you in advance!

Yeah i looked into something similar, my TV has a USB port tho, and it reads most stuff fine, as long as it is in H.264 or H.263, all the usual formats tend to work on it. So you can easyly hook it up, and it should pop right up.

I also noticed, that if you go to 1080p, you might see some stuttering in the video. (Depends on your TV hardware)

IF you want to connect it to a server, and dont have a Smart TV, then that is a problem, what you need in that case, is a media box , or a sat/tv box with some extra features, also, some devices only accept external devices in FAT32 file system architecture. Symbian mobile phones for example.

If the TV has internet support, like wireless or ethernet, then it propably can access NAS server with ease, but since your TV does not have an ethernet port, im pretty sure it lacks the software as-well

You can also stream media to your TV from a device over wirelss network.

As for the Hard Drive, the TV reads it, well it works like in any computer tbh, the Hard Drive Adapter has no processor on it, what reads and then plays the media. In anycase, the command must come from TV to play movie, delete, rename file etc.

Hope this helps you a bit.
