House Bill H.R. 287 (Game Rating Regulation)

https://www.countable.us/bills/hr287-113

Here we go! The Gov prepares its power against games!

How will this be enforced? Have people at every video game shop and watch everything. Like the link said, it is truly redundant

It's the US Government. Of course it's redundant. I assume they will treat it the same way with Alcohol and Tobacco sales.

Last action regarding HR 287 was 1/18/2013 when it was referred to the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade.  This is almost 2 years old.  It's not going anywhere.  It was and still is a dumb idea.

Since this is a very new Congress, the assumption that this is a dead backburner bill is weak. Hell, the ACA was created during the Nixon Administration and wasn't passed until 2008. Ancient laws come out of no where and get passed all the time, and without any notice whatsoever. And Dumb Ideas are Washington's specialty.

Except you're talking about an idea and laws that have been struck down in various forms multiple times in the past for being unconstitutional.

Thats ok, I hear that government involving itself in someones private life is only bad when it affects you (adversely), and since this doesnt effect the voters (adversely) because they are old enough to play these games with the ratings, and that most people don't play games, and that there are alot of parents, I expect this too pass....

Never underestimate the power of Washington's stupidity. Laws that are virtually the same thing get passed in tandem so if one is "unconstitutional", the other will still be in effect. Also, most laws that are "struck down" never disappear, they continue under the shadows with the courts being cohered into an extremely long appeal process. Since this doesn't affect anyone in Washington and it's something so little to them like video games, this thing could pass next year.

Whats to stop people from creating a steam profile that says they are 18?

Why does this need to be a law? The gma industry self regulates like the movie industry. You can't fix bad parents, no matter how many laws you pass.

The Government is redundant.

Isn't

If enacted, this bill would make it illegal for individuals to sell or rent “adults only” video games to customers who are under the age of 18, or “mature” games to customers under 17.

Already enforced?
