So from a neighbor I got a wii and it's been siting under my families TV, inactive, and the one game our neighbor gave to us is wii sports, and the disk doesn't work, so it's been siting there, and that got me thinking, homebrew, so I am just looking for some advice for a first time modifier of consoles, just some tips when I get started, and just a note, don't go into the support Nintendo because it's ethical, or the pc master race rants, I just want some advice, also the home brew site is down so if some one could explain that would be nice
so what are you wanting to do exactly? Homebrew can mean many things. Are you talking about converting the console into a htpc or small form factor gaming pc?
You could make a low cost, multi-touch smart board: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/smartboard-wii-remote/
I want to use it for gaming and I heard there are certain games not approved by nintendo that I can put on there, for free, and that caught my eye, and I want to try that out
meh, not my style
I had the homebrew channel on my wii, it can be really fun playing around with the homebrew apps. As the website is down I really dont know where you could get the files for installing it but if you find them its really worth it.
You need an SD card and one of the few exploitable games like Smash Bros Brawl, Twilight princess, Bomberman...
After you do that you can install homebrew apps like a USB loader that can load Wii game ISOs (that you can find on the internet) from an external hard drive (reason enough to install HC in my opinion);
you can install a media player, I used this a lot: I copied movies and TV shows to a thumb drive and plugged it in the wii, I guess this feature can be considered obsolete by now though.
Well, good luck
If you want any help with it, just ask :)
thanks, I already have the SD card, but you said it is a channel, I thought you had to load some software on to an sd card and than use that to get the homebrew channel, and I saw my once friend playing brawl with homebrew and every since I have wanted to, and now I have the chance, so I want to do that
You do have to load software on to an SD card and than use that to install the homebrew channel. The way I did it is I borrowed Smash bros. from a friend.
Smash bros has a custom stage builder that lets you copy your own stages to an sd card so you can share them with your friends. The homebrew channel installer shows up as a custom stage on your SD card and when you open it, it exits the game and installs the Homebrew channel on your wii. From there you can load games from regular DVDs, external hard drives... do whatever you want, really, theres even a google earth app you can download from the HC.
cool, so can I emulate street fighter 2 turbo with homebrew, or is that a no?
I think there are emulators for most nintendo, sega... consoles. The only exceptions are the Sony ones, I might be wrong though.
from what I have heard is that sony emulation isn't easy, but the potential for emulating on the wii is there?
Yeah, emulators work great. I think that game exists for some sega console.
I pulled a soft mod on my wii quite a few months ago so everything is quite fuzzy regarding the specifics. However i remember that i used the letterbomb exploit, this requires no game to run the exploit and i think its another method worth looking into. im not positive if it is the best method but it worked for me. Now i can use neogamma to play games that i once owned but lost over the years :)
i also have my Wii softmodded, its pretty fun to play arround with.
Homebrew channel has allot of cool things.
cool, I just want to get a decent gaming box set up, and I have an old TV that is composite video only and I was thinking the raspberry pi route, than I got the wii and homebrew seemed convenient, so I made this thread
So you want to soft mod it?
Or just installing homebrew and some emulators?
homebrew, some emus, and maybe get some games, the unconventional route, the typical stuff, It has been siting under our families TV, and I want to do some stuff with it, and homebrew seemed like the way to go
Hey guys need some help with some weird documentation on the internet, I have been looking around and on one website it says when you have letter bomb you have to put it on to and SD card, not SDHC card, that is 2 gigs and less, but on other sites it says use what ever storage medium your heart desires as long as it's an sd card or a usb device, could you point me in the right direction
I used an SDHC for it, but I don't know how you could use a USB device cause I remember reading somewhere that the USB ports can only be used for data transfer after the wii is softmodded.
https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-softmod-a-wii-and-play-backup-wii-gamecube-and-wiiware-games.360687/ Here's the guide I used, a few things might be out of date and lead to confusion but it worked perfectly, the only thing I can't figure out how to do is start straight to USB loader GX.
I've been trying to mod my friends Wii and all the SDHC's we have between us make the machine lock up on starting bannerbomb, Unless some very specific brands work you'll likely need a regular SD card. Check some old digital cameras or phones, you might manage to find one.
