Home server help

I got a old computer that I want to make a home server with it. Its a old computer and runs XP. What software should i use and if needed what OS. as well as how I should set it.

Are you familiar with Linux?

You'll probably get more out of it if you can use Linux, if not there are a few things we can do to make XP secure and useful for this purpose.

Not familiar with Linux but will willing to learn. just dont know what one to use

just a simple home server for pictures videos and stuff like that

thanks i will see how it goes in 2 days

Thanks I will remember that

try nas4free or freenas, nas4free is more stable in my experience, and the update cycle is regular. i love nas4free as you can put bugs on their forum and they actively work to correct issues with patches. i recommend getting an embedded copy. as it is easier to update. takes about 4 hours to setup and it runs great on older hardware. they are even working on an arm release! i have an older q8200 rig that i use to back up my main server nightly. and it works great. and idles most of the time so power consumption isnt an issue. also i find they always bring updates with latest bsd and protocol updates pretty quickly. freenas wasnt a good experience for me and i had trouble with zfs. i lost alot a data during an update config process :I thank fully i had a backup so it wasn't that bad. to me only the ui of freenas seems to be a selling point. seems more modern.
tl;dr
try nas4free, won't regret it!
