Home server for multiplayer game hosting

Alright guys, here's what I want to do, I have a defend Internet connection. (100~Mbps down and 10mbps up) and we and my friends play a lot of games that require you to host your own server(minecraft, 7dats2die) so I want to build a little server type PC to host these, but I don't really have an idea of what kind of hardware to go with. I have a couple 1tb HDDs. But I need everything else. I want to spend around $500. But I can go higher I it will dramatically increase performance.

WOO, CL7 memory!

Okay, so $500 is pretty low, but let's work with it.

4 threads of Haswell should be plenty for game servers. At a higher budget, you could fit a lower-end Xeon in there, but the i5 is enough.

8GB of 1600mHz memory with a CL of 7. Very fast, and plenty for these servers.

Cheap, but capable 1TB HDD. Should be enough.

Small, and very efficienct PSU; this rig will be on almost 24/7, right? You want to save power.

No GPU, use onboard.

Cheapo McCheaperson case, because it is just a shell.

Very barebones, but enough for game servers, and, only $500!

would you be interested in BOTH a sweetass case mod and a server build?  hold on I'm preparing it as we speak

If a Xeon would be a lot better I could expand the budget

As I already have some server quality harddrives. So no need to Include them in te $500ish budget. Also. Prices will be in CANADIAN. thanks guys

You won't be running it 24/7 so you don't need an Xeon or server memory.Get a decent 4 core cpu,8 gigs of ram, barebones micro-atx mobo, cheap lsi raid card, cheap intel network interface card.

Run your drives at raid 1 or if you have three drives raid 0+1.

I probably will be running it 24/7, just cause all my buddies have different work sceduels, some were playing shit all hours of the day. But if I don't go with a Xeon, would a 4 core intel or a 6/8 AMD be better?

You should get server rated memory and a 4 core Xeon and a server mobo then.1333 cl9 memory would probably be better than 1600 cl11 ones for your needs.Everything i said about memory capacity, raid and network still applies.

You won't be running cpu intensive stuff so you don't need 6 or 8 cores. You can safely go with lower end Intel chips.

and a broken NES to put it inside

you'll need 16GB of ram for hosting minecraft servers

Ok so what processor/mobo would you recommend?

E3 Haswell Xeon you can afford,Socket 1150 Supermicro micro-atx mobo that supports your chosen cpu's TDP.

Kingston is the go to brand in server memory

You could go 2u rackmount chassis with industrial 80mm fans and vapor chamber heatsink if you want to save space. But it would be loud and it would require server psu.If you are going to use a normal desktop case make sure you have a very high quality psu and a cpu cooler thats tough.

he's hosting minecraft not folding DNA proteins, there is no need for xeons or server grade ram with error correction

I would prefer to Xeon go with Xeon. Ill probably look into a low end haswell since there pretty energy efficient. If that's a good idea. Cause yes, I'm not doing anything super intense. Just minecraft and other servers like it.

if you want xeon then go 1155, you can put 1155 xeons in desktop boards, you can't put 1150 xeons in desktop boards

He won't be folding but he said he will be running it 24/7 so it is probably is a good idea for reliability and peace of mind to run xeons and server rated memory.

Although if you and your friends won't be affected that much if your server goes down for whatever reason you can still use desktop parts.

will any 1155 motherboard suppor tthe xeon 1220 v2?

this is what im thinkin generally,

with this RAD card

Folding doesn't need ECC, either. Don't know why he is recommending it.

You have to get a SAS card if your drives are SAS.

Corsair CX and TX series are made by Channel Well wihch is not a good psu manufacturer.

The only 3 brands you can trust are Seasonic(High end Antec,High end Corsair,XFX),Superflower and Enermax(Lepa).

Yes. I. Would.
