To start I don't know much about modems and routers so I really don't know what to look for. All I know is I want to purchase one so I no longer have to pay $10 a month to rent one. I have Comcast and am getting 105 Down & 25 Up. Comcast tells me I need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and I need a 5ghz router to stream games to my Shield Tablet. I have 8 WiFi devices always connected and will have 2 PC's hard wired. I use Private Internet Access so it would be nice to have that installed on my router but not a must. I would like to keep the cost around $100. Recommendations? Thanks!
If you have any old computers convert those into a router. they have a good tutorial somewhere on there channel.
I dont have any. I hand down my old systems as I build new ones.
Here is that video you were talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0JFfpG4BWI
Anyone have any recommendations besides using an old PC?

Thats a bit more than I wanted to spend. Is there a reason you recommend this unit over a cheaper one such as this netgear? I could even do something like this for a lot less, surfboard modem and router. Why should I buy the one you recommended?
I paid more attention to key features and an all-in-one solution so that the modem could still be in use after 5 years. The surfboard seems like a sufficient modem, but for the router i'd choose one which has ac wifi and gigabit ethernet. Or just a gigabit router and a seperate access point, allowing the ap to be upgraded after a while.

It is a pretty nice, but not wireless ac, router that you can flash custom firmwares on. Tomato and DD-WRT will run on it which will open up a lot of new options. fF you don't watch to change the operating system there is the Merlin firmware.

The asus n-600 routers are nice and cheap ($30-$80) they work for about a year before they need to be restarted every now and again, have a few going on 3 years and there ok. For comcast you will want a surfboard modem its just simpler when you call them up to activate it.
Second you want to document when you return your router/modem when you cancel Comcast 98% of the time they will say you never returned it and try to charge you ( there pretty much assholes) I also wouldn't be surprised if after you returned it the next 3 months they still charge you for it.
I don't need an all in one solution and can spend $200 if It is the best option for my needs. If I were to get the Surfboard what router access point would you recommend that would provide the connectivity I need? Or would you recommend a different modem and router combination all together?
