Home Assistant Setup on a SunFire X4170 - custom setup, or firmware upgrade?

I’m the “sysadmin” (still learning) at my local formula student team. I want to install Home Assistant for a few things around the shop such as the sauna we use for postcuring composite parts (currently a VERY homebrewed solution that’s prone to going off-course), and also SNMP monitoring.

I could use a Pi, but we have an old SunFire X4170 lying around, and I’d prefer something more reliable than an SD card, especially if we choose to run stuff like the smart lock via that setup, so I don’t really want to. Also, it’s way cooler.

Problem is, I have a pretty early firmware version, which doesn’t support UEFI boot. From what I could gather, later versions of the firmware did support UEFI boot, but those are locked behind a Support Identifier.

Since my team is part of a university, as is common here in Germany, should I try getting access to the firmware via the university, or am I better off building something to make Home Assistant work on legacy boot?

I would try getting what you need from the University; if you can’t, try Legacy Boot.
