Is the book worth a read?
The entire series is worth the read, about 1300 pages in total between all of the books, you might have to read them twice to really understand them, they are very, VERY confusing, but the humor is generally funny if you get it.

The BBC production of H2G2, despite being dated and cheesy production value, is considered by many fans to be a better representation of the original radio programs (and then books) than the recent film was (but both capture the feel of the source material)...

If you find the humor and content appeals to you, you should read the books... You can find all of them in one combined volume, normally cheap. Also they are common books that should be found in most public libraries worth a damn as Douglas Adams was a doubleplusgood humorist.
