Alright guys/gals.. have been lurking around for what seems ever and figured i may as well join up! So firstly hi! Im from the UK and live/go to university in Oxford.
So anyway, before i came to uni i received a free computer which i was pretty happy with, its much better than the laptop i'd been stuck with.. its relatively basic and ugly imo.. (I dont have the money to build a PC that i'd be truly happy with as it would run into the thousands.. but non of us do right..?)
E7500 on some Foxconn matx board @3.5Ghz
2Gb DDR3
Asus GTX 460 768mb
OCZ StealthXStream 2 500W
Onto the problem.. As you know the 560 has just come out for £200 onwards and i want one! Now it gets slightly confusing.. i'd Sli my 460, but cant as it would mean updating my board (completely pointless as 775 is dead) thus.. i need a completely new system but cant afford it yet.. in 2 years, sure.
I can sell my 460 to a friend for the same price i bought it, so selling is not an issue.
An Asus GTX 480 has just come on sale for £190. What would you choose/suggest?
I've looked at benchmarks (1680x1050) and the 480 is pretty much on par with the 560 if not slightly ahead..

I realise that the 480 has 'issues' and after writing this it makes sense to go for a 560.. but what's your opinion?
Cheers and sorry its so long winded...
EDIT: Admins/Mods anyway you can change my name to something else?
Firstly welcome!
Now,
The 480 uses way more power, and produces alot more head than a 560 ti. Honestly, you'd have to upgrade your powersupply for a 480, but if youre runnign a 460 without crashes, the 560 would be perfect. Plus if you do any small amount of overclocking on the card, it will run right next to a 580, for alot less money and power.
You can edit your name yourself. You put whatever name you want in the same place your current name is.

Pretty much what i was thinking, i have got an Antec Gamer 620 or something at home which would do.. but your right the 560 would be much more efficient.

*palm goes to face..
You can set your display name in profile settings.
I'd go for the GTX 560ti, its much better price/performance and ofcourse temperature.
I will laugh at anyone still buying the GTX470 and GTX580 in these days. Those were merely "beta products" in my eyes
wait an oc'ed 560 = 580? no way. Get the 560, or find a cheap 775 sli board, there's tons and get another 460

No way indeed. However, a well oc'ed 560ti can compete with gtx 570 in some games. In other words, it also competes with a stock gtx 480.
And why the hell go for 775 board that will only bottleneck the performance gain in sli?

=$225(aprox 165 euro) for a decent SLi 775 board and a new 460, and 2 460s kills one 560 which is more expensive than the 460 and the board put together.

why would it bottleneck? I'm sure he can find a cheap 750i or 780i that will do sli just fine. Are you talking about lane speed? 8x by 8x is just fine, doesn't make a huge performance hit at all

Getting another 775 board is pointless, i'll go for 2011 perhaps 1155 seeing as it should be dirt cheap (hopefully..) and if i could find one it would have to be a 790i as im on DDR3.. thats not so easy.
If i had the option i'd rather Sli but seeing as i get the money back from my 460 i'll just go with an EVGA 560 ;) will bottleneck my cpu to hell.. but oh well!

Bottleneck as in weak cpu's and memory.
Today's games actually use some cpu power, and difference is huge just by going from 775 to 1156/1366/1155.
Better to just save up for a real build, instead of outdated parts.
is the switch from the 460 to the new 560 Ti worth at all?? all the sites say that its 30% faster... but does it really make a significant difference ?

Depends on who'se perspective. Imo its worth it, if you can afford it without saving up for a long long time.
anyways, I'm going from 460 to 570 soon, more to get there in performance per single card.
