Hey Logan, you like headphones, right?

Check out what arrived yesterday. Talk about jaw-dropping realism, just unbe-f***ing-lievable, and a huge, vibrant soundstage.

Holy shit dude, are those electrostatic headphones? those must have cost you a fortune!

No, they're orthodynamic, which is still a planar headphone, only it uses normal amplification and has a traditional 1/4" TRS connector (balanced input cables are included too). You are right that they weren't cheap, though, $1500 with a generous discount. I sold off most of my other cans to buy them, including my Sennheiser HD800s, but these are completely worth it. Listening to them is like ear sex.

Would you mind me "borrowing" them from you lol.

I wish NZ wasnt so fucking small and filled with cheap ass people so I could go listen to a range of high end headphones so I can chose a good set. Not keen on spending $300 on a pair of SR-5's and transformer to find I dont like them.

How do they sound in terms of bass? I understand electrostatic headphones lack in bass while electrodynamic are great for bass but tend to be muddy. Havent got a clue when it comes to orthodynamic.

We should do.. I know some places in chch that let you test out speakers before buying.

All the retail stores have products you can test here in Auckland but its always BOSS and Beats and Sony. And never is it a product worth more than $300. I have only once seen an HD650 in a retail store. Like hell am I going to see an HD800 in a retail store let alone be able to test it to see if its what im looking for.

Borrow them? What?! That would be like asking someone if you could borrow their kids. (j/k)

For bass they're as close to perfect as I've ever heard, it's very tactile and precise. It honestly feels like there's a sub in the room with you. I've not found any faults in their sound so far; bass, mids, or treble, and their soundstage is immense, I'm in complete awe of them. The only thing that mildly bugged me is their weight (600g) but my neck is quickly adjusting to it and I'm not noticing it as much today as I did the first time I put them on.

The headset im currently using is 500g so wouldnt be much for me to adjust but I just dont know if I want to go electrostatic or something like this. Also desktop speakers giving out so I need to buy a new set. Electrostatic speakers with an electrodynamic sub? Is that a thing?

These look amazing. I have been looking at them here and there... and I was thinking the same thing... "If I sell my other headphones I can maybe get those or possibly an electrostatic set of headphones."

Do it, do it!  :-)

I first heard them at an audio convention last year and ever since I've been obsessed with getting a set. The Audeze LCD-2 and LCD-3 models are similar, but the X are brighter and have more "sizzle" on the top end, and as a rock/metal/classical listener they're more suited to my tastes.

These are a lot like having electrostats, only you don't need to buy a $4000 electrostatic amp (that's over $8000 for the best `phones and a suitable amp), like the Blue Hawaii SE or STAX SRM-727. If I had unlimited resources I'd still rather have stats, because their dynamics are even better still, but I don't.

A good review to check out. Tyll knows his shit, he's been in the headphone business all his life, if he loves them then that says a lot.

what DAC are you using with those things? =o

I've been using a Matrix Cube (great value) as my desktop DAC for a long time, along with an NAD 3225PE as my dedicated headphone amp. The latter is pretty old, I think it was made back in the early 90s, but it's in great shape, has plenty of power, and produces a rich mellow sound without any background noise at all.

At some point I'm going to upgrade to some new Schiit (heh) but it'll need to wait a while, I'm as broke as a peasant now.

Dayum.... that Schiit is expensive XD

i was thinking about getting a Fiio e10k ($75) and Audio Technica M-50 ($120) OR the M-50x (for the detachable cable, most notably for using the short portable cable when at school)

your set up is on the HNL..... Ho-Nutha-Level.

Yeah, it ain't cheap, but things like that I think of as an investment, because I plan on keeping them for so long.

If I were shopping the $200 range for headphones and an amp, I'd get the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros off Massdrop and this NuForce amp off ebay for $60 and call it a day. That would be a good value setup.

Those headphones are amazing, what are you using them for? Something specific?  I cant imagine them being used for something on the internet lol, everything would be too low quality for those beasts

They're for anything but 90% of the time I'm listening to music. I rip my CDs to lossless FLAC files, or buy the songs in lossless format, and store them all on my NAS/cloud server. That way I can play them on my desktop or stream them anywhere with an internet connection. Screw Pandora and Spotify. haha

Edit: Oh, they're great for games, too. The directional accuracy is so good it almost feels like I'm cheating.

From my understanding CDs have higher quality songs and downloads from the internet such as the amazon store make them lower quality.  That would make all the difference with a set of headphones like those.

I like the idea of being able to stream my music from any device through a NAS.  Can it be done on a mobile device such as iphone, my iphone only has 8gb so something like that would be very helpful.

those headphones look interesting... i also like how it has an optional mic attachment. i am sure the modmic 4.0 is great, but tha extre wire, and balancing, and sticking something to the headphones... idk, not really for me.
