Help with Linux X870E M/B with 5.1 ch audio, back ports muted when front port plugged in

Some background. Been using Linux since the late 1990’s. Just built a new machine, using a Gigabyte X870E M/B (9950x cpu, with 9060xt graphics running Fedora 44 KDE) works great. Was packing away the boxes etc from the build and noticed that I still had a set of Logitech X530 speakers that I thought I would connect to give me better sound than the crappy speakers I had connected to my laptop prior to this build.

Reading the M/B manual I found that I need to plug in 2 jacks at the back and 1 jack at the front to get 5.1 audio on this machine & to use the windows utility to configure it . OK! Haven’t used windows for at least 15 years, so I dredge up the knowledge to remap the ports on the M/B to give me 5.1. No problem. Install alsa-tools, start hdajackretask, remap my ports and start testing. Nothing! So scratching my head I started to go through my config to work out what’s going on. Eventually worked out, by chance, that there was no audio because, plugging in the front jack (mic|headphone) mutes or disables the back ports and the output is very very quiet on only the centre speaker & subwoofer (front port).

Question is this :- How to stop the back ports being disabled/muted when connecting the final plug for my 5.1 speakers. I am sure its an overide to the
snd_hda_codec_alc882 hdaudioC2D0: ALC1220: module, but I can not find out what it is!

Does anybody have any pointers!

I have followed numerous posts attempting to resolve this but have been unsuccessful so far.

Thanks

The M/B behaves as it was designed, you may want to check on how to use the rear outputs only as that’s basic stuff these days, even on Linux.

Turns out its actually quite simple. In alsamixer, disable automute.

Hope this helps someone else.
