Help with hosting home VPN?

I’ve got a calix gigacenter (854g) as my isp gateway and an asus router behind it. I want to set up a vpn on the router so I can ssh to a linux box remotely. What’s everything I need to do here? I had my isp change the gateway to bridge mode but nothing changed as far as I could tell. I need to disable DHCP? I did that, but after doing so I lost connection and had to hard reset the gateway, even after trying to specify an IP address. Something with mac address cloning? Should the router still expect to be assigned an IP? SOS!

The 854g needs placed in bridge mode and then reboot your router. It should pull a public ip address and then you can control port forwards and vpn settings on your router. You will not be able to use dhcp or wifi from the 854g and some people mentioned that bridge mode did not disable those zo you will need to verify your network config.

Your router will need to handle dhcp and wifi and anything else you need.
