Help with domain renewal

I don't know where to ask this so if this is not meant to be posted here just let me know and I'll move it.

A while back when Wendell made the intro video to the linux server stuff I got myself a .tech domain and decided to host my email with google and love it at the moment. Since I am using it as my main email now I wanted to check pricing and found domain.com to be cheaper for renewal. When it comes time for renewal next year it will cost me $50 USD at the moment but domain.com will be like $10 USD or something. How do I go about changing who I do the domain renewals with?

You do what is called a transfer. You go onto the existing domain register and make sure the domain is "unlocked" and that the whois emails are correct. You can also get a transfer key or EPP(some TDL's have this and some don't, I'm not sure if the .tech does).

On your new register you would then rebuy the domain as a transfer. You will put in the EPP code if you have one. They will email the contact info on the whois and get permission to transfer the domain and then move it. FYI you need to make sure you have your DNS settings or name server settings if using a third party as you will need to put this in on the new register. On the new register you need to make sure your whois info is right again and then make sure the domain is "locked" on the new one to prevent transfers.

Thanks for that. I don't fully understand but I will do some ready based on what you said :) Thanks

Check the FAQ on sites like godaddy. I think they have some youtube videos on transferring a domain that might help explain it better.

Generally the domain register will have a section of their site on doing domain transfers with a basic walkthrough.
