Help with decision

So I'm currently running an AMD Athlon II x4 635 running at 2.90 GHz.  I'm looking to upgrade CPU and mobo.

My questions are:

How long is AMD going to stick with this socket (AM3+)?

The Phenom II 965 Black is $125 less than the FX-8350.  Is the FX-8350 worth more than double the price?

Or is the Phenom II 965 worth upgrading to from the Athlon II 635?

I like the idea of spending less money on the CPU and shifting that over to the mobo so I can get plenty of life out of it while also being able to switch to potentially top of the line AMD in future.  Thanks in advance guys.

better qeustion, what's your GPU, if I know that then I can tell you what justifies what CPU

What Giga said. Also, AMD said that they are gonna stick with AM3+ 1 more year( 2 at best), so Steamroller( their next line-up of CPUs) is likely to be AM3+. But it also depends on your chipset and manufacturer. Though it may be AM3+, if it's a really old chipset, your manufacturer won't bother updating your bios to support newer AM3+ CPUs, because as much as possible they want you to buy a new board.

Thanks for the input guys.

Well GPU is going to be new and I haven't decided yet. Somewhere in the $200-$250 range for that. For the mobo I was hoping to get 990 chipset. So I guess my main ordeal is whether my money is better spent investing in current top end CPU or a current top end mobo then wait for the best cpu that mobo can support.

i've heard good stuff about the sabertooth 990fx r2 (revision 2) also an 8 core isnt going to benefit you if you only play games so a quad core would do or a six but 99% of games only use 1-3 cores theres only one game i know uses all available and thats arma II but that game eats processing power but then if you render videos or 3d graphcs the 8 cores are better, also if you get a quad core to save money just get a hyper 212 evo cooler and overclock for some boost
