I’ve scourged the web for answers to this problem, but I have yet to find an answer to my peculiar problem. I have a Ryzen 1700 PC with a Gigabyte
AB350-Gaming motherboard, 16GB of RAM (2x8GB Corsair 2666MHZ) and an RX 480 Graphics Card.
My RAM keeps dropping from 16GB to 8GB, although my motherboard still sees the total 16GB of RAM. Windows also states that there’s 16GB RAM, but only 8 is used. Both sticks work individually and once I change the RAM slots the 16GB appear usable again. I have no idea what causes this, other than that my PC froze a few times the last time I changed the RAM sticks to another slot again. After the freeze I think Windows went back to using only 8GB of RAM. I can’t say for sure if that’s when the downgrade happens, because I’ve only recently realized that this was happening to me. Anyway, It’s a strange thing and I haven’t found any relief to the problem. As of now I’m back to having all of the 16GB detected again, but I just made the switch so perhaps my PC will freeze up again and I’ll be back to having only 8GB of RAM available.
Any ideas anyone? Oh yeah, I’m running Windows 10 Pro.
Any ideas and help will be appreciated!
Thank you!
try and update your motherboard and chipset drivers. That would be my first hunch. If that doesn’t work, perhaps reinstall windows. If it keeps happening, I’d have to think a bum memory controller or other issue with the board.
Get a USB and memtest86 or… windows 10 has a built in memtest. Try one stick at a time.

I’ve done a memtest already, but it couldn’t find a problem. I have updated the motherboard the previous time I had an issue with my memory. I think the problem is my motherboard. As of now I have the 16GB available (awesome!) and I’ll keep my eyes open for changes. I was interested to see/hear if anyone else has had this problem. It’s a first for me ;).
Also, I tried booting into Linux via an USB stick when I lost my memory the last time (Ubuntu Mate 18.10). Linux detected only 8GB of memory, so the culprit is most likely my motherboard.
Update your bios if you didnt do that already.
If that doesn’t fix the problem, then i’m guessing that it might be ¨likely¨ a motherboard issue.
In that case contact the motherboard manufacturer for an RMA.
Assuming that you boaght the memory as a 2x8GB kit.
Also make sure you populate the correct slots as recommended in the manual of the board.
Which slots are occupied?
There’s 4 slots and I’ve used all of them (black and red slots). I can’t remember how they are named, but basically I deduced that the red slots are for linking a pair of memory and the black ones are to linking another
pair of memory. I think I’ve had in both configurations i.e. having the red and black ones occupied with a
memory stick each. I’ve tested both memory sticks solo in the first red slot next to the processor. Both worked.
I haven’t matched the red or black slots together, because that just seems wrong to do. Right now my computer is still operating properly. I have updated my Bios to the latest version. We shall see what happens. No crashes as of yet either. I am hopeful!
Have you checked the motherboard manual to verify that your guessed configuration is correct, and that you are using the memory slots in a supported configuration?
