Help Selecting OS for Home Server

Hey guys I've come across some parts for a home server that I'd like to build but have been doing some reading about FreeNAS not running safely with non ECC RAM and need some opinions on OS choices.

I'd like to run a simple file server for my Windows/Linux/Mac computers I have in the house for data backups and such. Also would like to run a Plex server to keep all my movies on and stream to my local devices in the house. I've installed FreeNAS on many boxes and pretty familiar on how to get what I want using it but just learned about the dangers of running it on non ECC RAM.

If there is another OS solution for what I'm needing I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks for your time and input,

You could take something like CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu Server and Build it up,

If you want some more plug and play rockstor or media vault are pretty nice.

But to back @SpadeFire91's recomendation, have you tried open media vault?

Try Fedora 22 Server edition. Great tools.

Played with in a VM I have a Suse web services server and a Debian based NAS.

NAS, RockStor
