Hi all, I’m not sure if i am doing this right.
I need help with planning my first lab. I have used a lot of ready-built equipment in the past, but now that I am doing this for myself and not on the company dime, I want to set this up just right for me.
I’m looking to do a Home NAS with three-tier storage, two focused on my home workload for my business, and one for Media storage and home automation. Currently, I run a mixed Plex/Jellyfin server for the Media server, and looking to migrate to Jellyfin only. Second, I am looking to set up a Redundant Server Head Unit, that are mirrored, hosting Proxmox, which in turn, hosts PFSENSE Router, a Dedicated Docker VM(RetroNAS, namely) on a separate internal storage array, and TrueNAS. Storage for TrueNAS would be through a separate external Drive Enclosure rack unit, connected over HBA, with the adapter passed through to the TrueNAS VM.
TrueNAS Storage would have a Media and automation tier, which is all spinning rust, and a two-tier system with SSD for high-demand data, and data that needs permanent storage on high-speed storage. Second Tier would be spinning rust with Read and write cache.
Now, after describing the broad goal of this, I need help with 1. how to configure the installations to work on Proxmox, since I only have a passing understanding of this, and want to learn more. 2. Since all of this will have high hardware demand, what kind of hardware should I be looking at to make this happen? I would like to have this be stable with a lot of headroom for further additions and longevity to make upgrading something I can avoid for a while. Finally, 3. What modifications can I make to reduce noise, heat, and dust, and optimise the software to reduce unnecessary system strain to cut down on power consumption, and generally wearing out the hardware?
Like I said at the start, I’m not sure if I am posting this right, and I know that this may seem like a lot of inexperienced nonsense, but I want to learn more, and set up something to make working from home easier and general home life outside of work for me and my family, nicer. So I hope the collective knowledge of this community can help.
Thank you for your time.
