I've been looking around for an ethernet switch that will suit me best. I'm thinking about going with the D-Link GO-SW-5GE, which has almost everything I've been looking for except energy star approval. It probably doesn't make much a difference, but it does use roughly twice the power of the DES-105 which is energy star approved. I considered going with the DES-105, but it only gets up to 10/100 speeds, which might be ok, I'm not sure ...
Whatever switch I get will mostly be handling a computer and a media player running Netflix. What would more then 10/100 speeds be good for? I certainly don't get internet that fast, only around 12 Mbps, but in the future I might setup a home media server, a small multiplayer game server, and a self hosted website/email/file-sync.
My dream specs would include:
- Around five or eight ports
- IEEE 802.3az Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE)
- Energy star
- Unmanaged
- Fanless (it'll be in a dusty place, so this is important)
- Metal housing
- Three prong wall plug (small switches with these probably don't exist, but it would be cool)
- Wall mounting brackets would be nice, but I can manage without
As far as speeds and compatability go, I don't know much.
