Ok so I'm giving my old computer to a friend; his pentium 4 just isn't cutting it.
The only part he needs to buy is a graphics card, I've told him I would find one for him to buy.
My thinking was to get him a HD 4870 1gb like mine as I picked i up for about £45 second hand around 5 months ago, turns out they are going for like £70 now which is a bummer cause its a great card.
Basically I'm looking for something that will play newer games on medium-high farely well (like the 4870 does) but for around what I paid for it £40-50.
Any suggestions where to start?
Well, I have a XFX GTX 260 216 core that still works fine, never got around to selling it. I live in Canada though so shipping might be a bitch.
I think shipping would be horendous from canada to the UK.
Yeah, just roughed it out with UPS and shipping would cost over $100, so no luck there.
As a funny side note, I needed a postal code, so I brought up a code searcher for the UK and it needed a street name, it being the UK, I tried Tea Street, gave me a big list of postal codes. Got a laugh out of it.
I really hope this is just a temporary fix, because that computer is seriously outdated, and the 4870s are outdated too. They still might run games, but they're not going to be giving you DirectX 11 and other more modern graphical features. I would suggest that your friend saves up some money and gets a whole new rig. You can buy a cheap card for now to serve as a placeholder until he saves some more money though.
tbh hes running a pentium 4 with a 64meg gpu atm so i think the what I'm giving him will tide him over till he decides to upgrade properly; as for my 4870 I'll be changing that out for a 7950 or gtx 670 as soon as I can get £300 together.
