Help: Display driver stopped responding and has recovered

Yes, the famous TDR of Nvidia strikes again!

I have the latest drivers in hopes to remedy this, heck I even did the registry hacks that some sites have recommended, but alas, it has returned, and it is interfering with my Cities Skylines gameplay (thank goodness I got the autosave mod; last time I lost 20,000 population cos I didn't save prior to the crash)

I am at my wits end trying to find a fix for this...

Is it driver conflicts? Hardware issues?

I am investigating if it is overheating issues, but until then, I need your help... Thanks!

BTW, here are my specs:

CPU: Intel i7 3770

Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme 4

RAM: G.Skill Sniper 4gb x2 1600mhz

HDD/SSD: Seagate 500gb/Plextor 128gb

GPU: Gainward Geforce GTX 660ti

PSU: Corsair G700

OS: Windows 8.1

Perhaps you should try completely removing all GPU drivers and install them fresh. Download the DDU utility by Clicking Here. Restart PC in safe mode. Extract the files to desktop or where ever, and run the DDU utility in Admin mode. Once complete, restart into Windows and run the GPU driver installer. Hope this helps.

A couple of theories:

  1. Power supply is not up to snuff (don't really see that being the case).
  2. Overheating as you suspected.
  3. Corrupt drivers.
  4. Unstable overclock.

So far, the fresh install after uninstalling with DDU is working. Fingers crossed it will last =]

Guess the clean installs from Nvidia were never that clean at all huh?

Yeah, they seem to sometimes leave registry keys and other fingerprints around the system. Supposedly it is to make reinstall more efficient / faster but that's a bunch of nonsense to me.
