Help choosing a CPU

So my original plan was to get a Pentium G3258 to replace my current AMD FX 4130 and then upgrade to broad well on a Z97 board, But then I sold my Xbox One and get some money, so now my question would be should I go for a Xeon 1230V3 with 4 cores and HT or an i5 4690K? I mainly game and edit video from time to time but its not a every day occurrence. I will be pairing the CPU with a Z97 board.

i5 4690k, it will be overclockable unliike the xeon, it will do better in games and probably editing, and the xeons at this price are kinda crappy

why not trow a FX8320 on your current UD3P board?

Offcourse the 4690K is better for gaming, But i dont think its worth it, to spend $300+ for an intel mobo + cpu, right now. Your current mobo the ud3p,"if it is the black one", should be capable of handling a FX8320, i would say grab a FX8320 and a better gpu.

Like i said above the 4690K is better for gaming, however this highly depends on the games you play. I5 has a better single threaded performance, on which some games still relay on, games like arma, dayz, lol, wow. intel works definitely better. Also in Skyrim intel has an edge.

However there are also games, on where there is not much of diffrence between amd and intel, games like: Tombraider, Bioshock, Crysis3, Need for Speed, BF4. and such, in these games, a better gpu still makes more sense.

AMD is pretty much stuck in the past, less performance with higher TDP. So, I would stick with Intel.

Also, what Mattwhite said is not quite true. The Xeon E3-1230 v3 will actually do a better job at video editing because of its hyper threading capability. Some new Games make use of that feature either. It is basically a i7 4770 with a slightly lower core clock, however the boost goes up to 3.7GHz. Also its missing a build in graphics unit which isn't needed anyway and it is cheaper.

If you do not want or need to overclock, go with the Xeon. I upgraded from AMD to Intel and for me it was definitely  worth it. Also I can't confirm that any Game I know runs better on AMD CPUs. Really. (Edit: Not saying that it runs bad.)

I'd say grab an 8320, place it on your current motherboard. Great all round choice.

I think it's better to avoid the expense of an Intel chip. By squeezing more longevity out of your current platform, you'll bridge the gap to many other future considerations. New AMD chips rumoured for 2016. Or any future Intel platform e.g Skymont

let it be ... let it be ... yeah let it be!

Did you just quote a Paul McCartney / Beatles song that was written in the early spring of 1969?

+1 if true ... very impressed!

+1 good explanation

I think I'm too young to know that song.

I think I deserves a cookie.

its a very beautiful song isn it?

lol ☺

Freakin weirdos ha....

Here you go:

8320 just dropped in price too. AMD have cut lots of APU & CPU prices in the last few days.

What? The Xeon 1230 V3 is literally the same in benchmarks as a 4770K; only difference being the locked clock speed and lack of integrated graphics.

I also agree on the AMD side for now. Grab a FX8320 oc it a bit and pair it with a 280x or gtx770. I have a [email protected] and I play all the newest demanding games. I have not had one instance yet of my FX8320 even coming close to maxing out in any game. I also encode HD videos pretty quickly while doing other tasks. In Cinebench @4.3ghz my FX8320 is just above a stock Intel 3770k.

we'll you're forgetting that the Xeon has a higher binned chip.  Xeon is guaranteed for 24/7 use while the i7 chips aren't so in theory, the Xeon will last longer and have less instabilities and possibly slight better power draw efficiency.  Xeon is a very special chip because it is the best chip of it's equivalent consumer counterpart.

AMD price to performance is still quite competitive.  Power consumption can be negligible since overclocking negates any power saving opportunities you would have over stock clocks.  For us enthusiasts, we need to stop focusing on TDP and just look more towards raw performance for what you pay.  I've had both the 8350 and 4790k and i consume about the same amount of power with similar clocks.

Take a look at your needs, either being straight for gaming, productivity, etc:

If you're just gaming, I would rather go for AMD and then put the money you save for a better GPU and MB or even better cooling.  Soon 8 cores will be quite the advantage in gaming because the consoles use 8 core piledriver cpu's variants which means an FX-83xx might be a good point to go, 8320 atm is a great price point competitor.

Now if you're doing some productivity stuff with heavy rendering, than going Intel might be your best bet, Now productivity really loves IPC over Multi-threaded workload, So Xeon E5 and i7 is where you wanna be.

Don't spend too much on a MB for things you will not utilize, that's a big issue with most people is that they overspend on MB's when even an entry level high grade board can do just as good.  Even ASUS claims that all their z97 boards will have an extremely similar overclock.  Gigabyte has a similar method with their ultra durable boards.

With AMD's 990FX it's a different story, you want higher quality board, so i would stay away from MSI or Asrock, with 990fx during my experience I've seen too many stupid things happening with their boards, cheap quality components(disregard on Intel, MSI and Asrock do great on z87/97).

Hopefully this helps clarifying your selection, good luck!
