[HELP] Can't run Linux properly on Ryzen5 laptop with RX Vega

Hi guys. Got a laptop as a present, with the specs from the title. Trying to run ANY linux on it, to no avail. Im a fan of Solus, that was my first try, but no luck. (Used solus, fedora, ubuntu, etc)

I usually get acpi errors, amd-vi firmware errors, etc. I searched online for answers, but no luck again. The only hints were some firmware upgrades, but acer has only windows updates.

First I disabled SecureBoot. Booted from USB stick, installed but after restart I get the same errors (Also, hangs restarting, needs a hard reset). Sometimes it boots. But only sometimes. I get the errors all the time. I managed to install ubuntu yesterday (god the colour scheme is atrocious) installed the kernel update utility, and tried with newer kernels (4.17 and 4.18). Same shit. Out of anger I set bios to default settings (secure boot enabled) and it worked. But when I restarted it, it hanged. So did a hard reset, and same errors cropped up again.

So: I figured id put windows. Update bios, firmware, everything. And then, put Linux on it.

Am I dumb? Does this have any chances of working?

So my understanding is that these new ryzen mobile laptops (it’s the one with the vega8 integrated, right?) aren’t quite there with Linux. It’s gonna be a couple minor releases before we get stability, I think.

Fedora 29 is scheduled to come out near the end of october and it should hopefully contain a fair few bug fixes to get your laptop up and running with linux. It should hopefully come with 4.18 out of the box. If your feeling brave you can try to install the fedora 29 beta when that gets released

Beyond that i would try to boot up a net installer and have it install all the latest software when its installing the os.

Try the 4.19 RC kernels. They are stable from my testing and have more of the APU VEGA support that you need compared to the older ones.

Hey! There are similar issues with amdgpu with the desktop counterparts, 2200G and 2400G. You are not alone. Kernel 4.18 seems to have a better luck of working. I’ve seen similar problems with 2400G. The beta version of Manjaro seems to have better luck at working. So you can try that.

Thanks guys. I’ll be sad to try Manjaro, fail and have to install Windows again. Joshua from Solus said they’ll add new ISOs to the OS website in the following days, so I’ll wait for the new Solus iso’s as well. And then, I’ll try both and pray to the silicone gods.
