I’m trying to figure out what my new 10G network card for my PC is going to be. I already have an Intel x520-DA2 in my Homeserver hooked up to a cheap Sodola via SPF DAC-Cabels 2x10G / 4x2,5G switch. Also have a small noctua fan strapped to the x520.
Until recently the integrated 2,5G on my PCs motherboard was enough but now that I’m moving more data (blurays and stuff) I would like to switch to 10G on my PC as well.
I’ve been looking at the Intel x520-Da again, but wanted to know what other, better stuff might be out there as well that wouldn’t cause to many issues.
Was looking at Mellanox ConnectX3 and X4 as well as Broadcom nic or Marvell nics.
The server is running Truenas Scale 24.10, PC is running Windows.
Appreciate any recommendations and additional knowledge.
I’ve been running Mellanox Connect-X3 in my NAS and on my Windows PC and it’s been working rock solid since I installed them. The Intel cards are more expensive (depending on what your budget is) but the Mellanox Connect-X3 on the used marked are pretty cheap.
My Truenas is running on DAC but my Windows PC is running fiber optics due to the distance I needed from the switch.
Depends on your switch. You shouldn’t use RJ45 cards with SFP+ switches. Using modules only adds heat and latency.
Used Mellanox Connect-X3 are normally pretty cheap. They use to be around $30 but they seem to have gone up lately. Which is probably what i would look for TrueNas.
I currently have 3 TrueNas servers in my homelab. And i use 2 Mellanox X3 cards and an Intel X550. Both work great for TrueNas.
Nevertheless, if you decided with others, then Mellanox ConnectX3 and X4 has good performance compare to others and also it is reliable specially for high throughput jobs like your. Broadcom and Marvell cards should be fine too, but they are generally not as easy to set up as Intel or Mellanox cards so it is recommended to check the driver support especially Windows.
Yeah, it’s gonna be full sfp if I would go 10G. Either DAC as I already have between server and switch or fiber. Still got 2 intel transceivers from the x520 that came with it but I originally swapped for the DAC Cable
