Hello I am a new user

Hello I am a new user. I have been to other sites before in the past, but everything I have been to has been a shot in the dark of when and who answers a pretty simple question. Most of the responses in these forums seem intelligent, mature, and have a quick response most of the time...so your influence has inspired me to make an account. It's not fully set up just yet but hopefully I should have my profile complete soon when I have the time.

Bye for now.

Welcome!

PC Specs: Vostro 1500 because I enjoy an adventure

Loved my 1500. Found the damn thing in a barn. Cleaned it up, threw a T7700 in and unlocked the 8600M GT to an 8700M GT so it would play Red Orchestra. Great laptop.

Greetings human. I agree with you. I've not been here that long myself, but have found the culture to be one of problem-solving and collaboration, plus the spread of ages and geographical diversity always brings in unusual and helpful viewpoints.

Yo

I hope you like cats.

P.S. your username is AOL, I fucking hate AOL. Don't be like AOL.

Woah, Rawr!

Anyways welcome to the forum!

I'm a SpaceCat, not a... lion, or whatever. It's Hiss.

FYI the reason I hate them is the people I live with in England have a suuuuuuper old contract with AOL + don't use the internet much nowadays besides email... and don't care about it being like ~1Mb/s. Try getting the elderly on the phone with AOL telemarketers (or whatever they're called) to end the contract with them? Nope. They convince the aforementioned elderly that getting a "new" (by which they mean refurbished and stuck in a new box) router will help, and they can pay for it by giving hem 6 months of their contract in advance! Talk to them yourself? "We need to speak directly to the account holder". Makes me want to throw things so bad.

Don't mean to derail the topic, will make it its own if it drifts astray.

Welcome to the community.
If you have any questions just fire them.

Now now,
I still know all of one person with an aol email, don't hate.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Always nice to see and talk to people online that are friendly and have a good heart.

Mine I have had since new. Made a few modifications over the years like a T9300 and an 8600M GT. I always considered doing the 8700M GT .inf file beta driver swap, just couldn't get it to work (hardware wasn't recognized or something).

I am curious though, what were the specs on your 8600M GT? Reason I ask is that I have always seen specs that were always inconsistent online, and I have always been unsure about mine as if someone ripped me off by flashing the bios to something else or messed with the device ID somehow.

Mine shows up as a 10DE-0407 in GPU-Z with specs that I always found to be odd when comparing to TechPowerUp's databases. It looks like it has the specs of an 8400M GS when it should have the specs of an 8600M GT...just something that has been on my mind that I assume you came across.

Thanks again if you read this.

I used the second to last version of RivaTuner to change the device recognition and allow for a bit of clock modulation. It ran as an 8700M GT that ran at 565MHz Core and 435MHz Memory. RivaTuner couldn't help with the DDR2 speeds much, but it did help with the core clock in general. Was almost good enough to play World of Tanks on the lowest settings. Almost.

Same specs as the screenshot. The inconsistencies seem to come from the Inspiron 1720 sharing the card, and Dell stating that THAT machine had cards including GDDR3. As far as I can find, they never did. The MXMII mounted 8600M GT almost always came with GDDR3, however Dell did not use MXMII in the Inspirons and Vostros.

The reason it seems like an 8400 GS is because Dell dropped clockrates and chose to use DDR2 instead of GDDR3. The device ID I only assumed was tied to the custom PCB.

It's important to note that even at launch the 8600M GT was not held in high regard. It was just enough to play games of the time (2006-2007) but would usually require sacrificing resolution or details. Neutered even further with DDR2 it really starts to struggle.

Thanks for the quick response.

If you don't mind me asking, whatever happened to the laptop? Did it die as a result of overclocking, show signs of dying (the black screen flicker or driver disconnect), or did you just stop using it? Reason I ask is because I am tempted to use the software, but if you had a detrimental experience then I'm thinking otherwise (I kinda like my laptop even though it's on it's last leg).

Alright, I will think about it.

The screen and parts of the top-case were cracked (or flatout destroyed) when the bag it was carried in was toppled off a stairway. The hardware inside was fine and continued to run, and I never saw any lasting effects from overclocking.

That's the last picture I had of it after getting it rigged up with a screen and revived. Shortly after this I got a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p.

I should add that despite the rigged fan in the image, one of the things I liked very much about the Vostro 1500 was that it could handle the thermal output of the 8600M GT. The G84 chip was under-rated in it's thermal output so most companies (Cough HP! Cough) strapped it to tiny, crappy heatsinks (sometimes shared with the CPU) so the solder would breakdown very fast and decouple. Dell gave the chip it's own carrier card with a dedicated heatsink AND backplating, allowing proper cooling and prolonged usage at high intensity.

That must be a screen from a 1400 I assume. (edit: nevermind it seems like a correct size -- I didn't notice it shifted to the left) Shame to hear what happened to yours. I have had some rough times with mine but nothing as severe as that. That's just too inception-ish to see right now lol.

Yeah my 8600M GT, despite it's flickering, sudden black screens, and other nonsense that I have once and a while, keeps its temps in a reasonable range with always a steady temperature between 37 and 47 C. It would spike to around 59 C if I run something intensive but it never really goes over 60 C. I think maybe a few times it would if the environment the laptop is in is hot (like around 65 C to 67 C). In any case, Dell did a good job when they worked with the card. The old 8400 GS on the other hand I had in the laptop never had an issue at all. Some days I think I should just throw it back in because it is far superior just from stability and my experience alone.

By the way, we should suggest an integrated symbol system for the chat box. For instance a degree, currency, or accent symbol. I was tempted to go search for a symbol really quick but figured you all would understand.

welcome you! :D
that is all! :P
