Headset Adapter Help!

My brother got these headsets: http://www.amazon.com/Sades-AFUNTA-709-Professional-Black/dp/B00M3T4QRO/ref=pd_sim_pc_10?ie=UTF8&refRID=1F2QTF70B0R8BGQG10CZ ($21)

(Don't say anything on how he should have gotten a seperate mic and headphone. I told him, he said he didn't care.)

He also got this adapter: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-headsets-separate-headphone-microphone/dp/B004SP0WAQ/ref=pd_bxgy_pc_img_z ( $2 [they were on sale])

However the adapter doesn't seem to be working for the mic. Is it a faulty wire, or does he need to get another adapter?

If he needs another one should he get this? : http://www.amazon.com/Syba-SD-CM-UAUD-Adapter-C-Media-Chipset/dp/B001MSS6CS/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_y (people said to get these)

What is he trying to plug the headset into? Not many devices use a 3.5mm TRRS cable. Most 3.5mm ports will only accept a TRS cable, which does not have a connector for the microphone.

Seeing as he spent under $30, I'm assuming his budget is REALLY, REALLY tight. If that's the case, then yeah, try that little USB sound card. It's not that much of a risk at under $10.
