Head with one plug that shares mic and volume

One of my friends that I play online with has been using his phone to make skype calls while we play... and I can't take it anymore. I can hear every single bit of background noise, and his roommate is quite loud and obnoxious. I casually mentioned to him, "Hey man you should buy a headset" and he said he already had one, but he can't use it. I asked him why and I guess the one he has only has a single plug that shares audio/mic. He said they were skullcandy bass boosted headphones, so I assume something like this http://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-Crusher-Headphones-Built-Amplifier/dp/B00E1CS8QG they say they have a built in microphone, but it's all one plug

I came across this http://www.amazon.com/Maeline%C2%AE-Female-Plated-Headphone-Splitter/dp/B00PYZ2BT4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1447149201&sr=8-5&keywords=headset+splitter would that let his headset work with a audio and mic input at the same time? Everything tells me it would work, but I'm not 100% sure since I have no experience with this exact style of headset.

jup. it takes the mic and headphone and spits it so it can be fed into the PC separately. Sadly most modern laptops and all phones use the combo jack for space saving

As others said, yes it will work.
I experienced the opposite issue: my laptop has a combo 3.5mm Jack, but my headset has 2 separate jacks for audio and mic. I bought one of these and it works.
