HDMI 2.1 AMD and Linux

I have been told that HDMI 2.1 doesn’t work on Linux on an AMD GPU, yet it works just fine on my Bazzite PC. I get 4K/120 with VRR and HDR support.

I have a 7800XT hooked up to an LG C1.

The LG C1 also has Freesync Premium support and that is what the TV shows when it is connected. Is that overcoming the 2.1 limitation.

I doubt this is worth a new thread, but I figured I would ask

Is it at RGB, or 4:2:0 YCbCr (i.e. not full color resolution)? Because that’s what I get on AMD using the HDMI port (just re-checked on Fedora 41 – which Bazzite is based on I believe?)

PS: With an active DP 1.4 to HDMI adapter i can get 4k 120Hz at full RGB… I use a cablematters one, tried a Club3D one that did not work before, and a Sabrent one that worked but would overheat after 15m. No VRR though, I believe HDR could work but haven’t tried yet (not using KDE)

specifically the silverblue edition

Thats PROBABLY the case, but I didn’t notice any drop in quality so if 420 is what it takes to get 4K/120 then thats what it takes. I researched it and supposedly text is where you can really tell the difference between 444 and 420. But in most games, I’ve read you arent likely to notice.

I will confirm later.

You can press the Green button on your LG remote 7 times to bring up a little debug display. It will tell you if it’s RGB/YCBCR 4:4:4 or 4:2:2/4:2:0.

Yeah, its 420.

The best part is that I really cant tell. In assassins Creed origins and Witcher 3 I really only noticed any banding when the sun was out.

Otherwise I would never have known.
