HDD running slow all of a sudden

Hey all. I have experienced a problem recently. On my gaming rig that i have only had for 10 months in now running like utter crap. I have a seagate barracuda 1tb  64mb. It has been great for the past ten months but just a few days ago i started having problems. At times when i run or open a program it will go unresponsive or flat out crash and when i open task manager my cpu is only at 13% and my RAM at 8% and my HDD at a full 100% and it takes a while for the program to finish loading and become responsive again then it runs fine. The only thing i have changed is a windows update and i have already uninstalled the updates and it still runs like crap when i try to open a program. I am using windows 8.1 x64. I am sure its not a heat problem since i have a lot of fans in my case optimized for maximum airflow to keep my stuff nice and cool. What is can i do about this?

try running a disk check and check the smart info, your drive maybe dying.

I did that and its all came back normal.

Smart status is good as well. Could it be windows?

it could be the death of your hard drive. i had a similar case like this. My HDD was slowing down my system. some programs would " (X) is not Responding" (X being any program) then go back to normal than do it again 10 minutes later. then on task manager my HDD would be using 100% or 90% then go back to normal. including in games if you don't have your stuff back up, "DO IT NOW" cause your HDD can die at anytime. and in my case when i bought a New HDD and re-installed my stuff onto it the new HDD. the Old HDD i originally had in my system died.

Replace that drive ASAP. It may be still functional now, but pretty soon you will be in a world of hurt if you don't get your data off that drive and onto a new one. Try to minimize writing to disk in the meantime. You are having intermittent issues because parts of the disk are going bad, so it is having to relocate data or retry reads multiple times to get the correct bits. Once the data gets moved to a good part of the drive, the problems go away temporarily, but when you have a few areas starting to go bad, it is a sign that the rest will be soon to follow. You might be able to get a replacement if the drive is still under warranty, but you still have to get your files off it first.

Okay. Thanks for the heads up i am backing up all my stuff right now.

If i get a new HDD before this one dies is there a way i can just transfer all my stuff from one to the other?

yes there are programs that are designed to clone Hard Drives. however I haven't found a really good one yet. the ones i've used i really didn't like cause it was terribly complex to use.

Sweet, thanks for all the info. I will get that new drive ordered tonight..
