A friend dropped his external HDD and said it’s making weird noises when he plugs it in and windows becomes unresponsive. I’m assuming platter damage.
Can anyone recommend a good recovery service? Ballpark price?

Just in case your friend isn’t tech savvy. It might be worth double checking that he’s not plugging the disk in or using it in any way?
If someone has a disk that they think might be failing, the disk shouldn’t be used at all until a disk image can be taken of the drive.
I didn’t know they did HDD. Ez answer, I’ll send it there.
He did a good impression of something not spinning right. I’m pretty sure it’s physical damage and didn’t want to plug it in to hear it for myself.
