HDD failure rate

Not sure what to think. I tend to spin my drives constantly for 3-5 hours in a  day. This makes kind of scared for my seagates.

what do you guys think?

That's why I do Western Digital, I would do Hitachi but there drives are actually more expensive than WD

I will be replacing Them (internal and external), They are almost three years old now anyway. I just hate having to wait for that many Tbs of storage to move by USB 2.0...I will be getting USB 3.0 for new external drives. I hate HDD upgrade time. maybe my new build will make things better.

the backblaze info has been ripped apart by people, if you want to consider it like consumer report study (as many seem to think, though it is most assuredly not) it's quite flawed, there were different variations of their enclosures, drives towards the centers of racks/clusters will obviously have more stress, and they were running consumer drives (and i heard drives out of external enclosures and portable drives) in applications that should really be using enterprise grade drives

this said anyone who tells you seagate doesn't have big reliability issues doesn't have much experience, and on a personal note i think they're utter shit

I second WD.  In the event that they break there is a great rma process.  I have had a 1.5tb running at least 6 hours a day for years ever since I replaced it.

My examples are all circumstantial but I find it very funny that they rate the Deskstar highly. Where I buy my parts from the order of reliability from end users is completely backwards. Deskstars were known as Deathstars for a period, i believe they are better now, WD were second in the running but comparatively unreliable and Seagate were best of the running, though still had a failure rate, not exempt from failure.

All circumstantial and much has changed in the past few years after the flooding. It may have been a placebo effect to the end users, and people may not have been reporting correctly, leaving out the likely substantial success rates, but it is what it is.

I personally have had better results with the Seagate drives. Where as the WD drives I have had have been throwing up errors.

Millage may vary but for me I am happy with the Seagate drives I have. That said backups are always a good if not essential idea.
