HDD enclosure kills internet

This has me stumped so I'm turning to the collective wisdom of the internet.

I have the main HDD from my old Windows 7 computer in an enclosure hooked to my Windows 8.1 machine with a USB 2.0 connection.

Whenever I turn on the enclosure I can access the folders and files, but the router loses broadband connection.

CiT 3.5 inch USB 2.0 SATA and IDE HDD Enclosure
BT Home Hub 3

Any help troubleshooting would be appreciated!

I'd take a look at the System event viewer to see what's happening when you connect the drive to the machine. Your bound to find some clues there.
