Hi guys,
i bought a WD RED 3TB and a Intenso 4 TB (Toshiba MD04ACA400).
I want to use the WD RED later with 2 of his friends ( i will buy them in a month or something) for a Server Raid-Z and i bought it to copy all the files from a dying WD Green and use it a bit so this drive will fail first in the RAID so the chance that the other 2 fail in rebuilding the RAID decreases.
I want to burn the two drives in to see if the are doomed to fail soon.
I did: smartclt short, conveyance and long, wrote once with badblocks and canceled before testing once and let the badblock program finish his work another time.
Is this enough or should i do the badblocks test another time?
-----------------Serious Problem------------
I read the logs and there was an IO-Error and connection Errors on one hdd so i think the port or the cable is damaged. I will let problemdescription here for other opinions on this. I now use another cable at another SATA-Port.
In my server there are 3 drives. The normal, and the two new ones. I plugged out the internal one to attach the new ones and plugged it in in another SATA connector (if this helps finding the problem).
So when i ran badblocks the first time on the new hdd's. There where 2 warnings that the internal drive is failing because smartd wasn't able to read the smart attributes two times and later the problem disappeared.
So i let the server test the drives over the night and now badblocks is finished but i cant read the smart data of any drives due to IO-Error. Additionally the Windowmanager crashed and commands like "ls" can't be found.
Is the internal HDD dying now, or could that happen because its mounted on /dev/sdc now instead of /dev/sda like before. Or is it simply a bad SATA-cable?
thanks for your help
Felix
