OK,
so my graphics card died (which was an r9-270x). I now find myself in a weird position, I could either purchase a gtx-1080 or a rx-480
I've looked at the benchmarks and am still undecided.
I only play games currently in 1080, and most of the games I play are flight sims and Kerbal space program and I would like them to run smoothly and maxed out.
so what do you guys think? will the 480x meet those needs? or should i just take the hit and get the 1080.
If you can spare the cash without pain - 1080.
Right now the 480 is probably the best bang for the buck at 1080p on the market right now.
Having said that, that is right now. With DX12 still being in its infancy and Nvidia constantly trying to monopolize the GPU market through underhanded tactics, who knows what it's going to be like down the line.
I don't get how your choice is either between a 480 or a 1080. The price difference is massive. Doesn't seem like it would make much sense to cross shop them...
Any who though I'd recommend the 480 8GB model if you're just playing those sorts of games at 1080p. That should give you a nice boost from your 270 while still not breaking the budget.
If you do want a bit more power, something say for a possible 1440p future upgrade, or to last a bit longer, take a look at the 1070. It is a beast and much cheaper than the 1080.
1080 or 480? Hmm that's a hard one. What? Are you kidding? 1080 all the way... The RX 480 falls in a far lower performance and price bracket. If you can get a 1080, get a 1080. Especially if you plan on 1440p or 4k gaming in future.
If you do not want Nvidia to rule the market or want to put aside money for another upgrade down the line, take the RX 480 8GB.
The 1080 is too expensive of a card to justify the massive price tag.
Maybe take a look at the R9 Fury cards, they are currently as cheap as the RX 480 and out perform them by more than 8 FPS in most cases.
meet in the middle with a good 1070. tons of power with a nice drop in price from the 1080
can confirm: I own one
Get a used GTX 960 4GB. $100ish. Keep the money in your pocket and wait. There's always another generation of video cards on the horizon, and it doesn't make sense to have more than you need.
When the 1080ti comes out you can get a used 1080 for $400 or less.
rx 480. I dont know why you would get a 1080 if that is all you are playing at. Plus a cheap 1070 would be better then the 1080 for what you're doing.
Have you checked the latest flight sim recommended specs? and their users as they're usually up to date with what works best. just a thought
the 480 will def meat your needs! save your money so you can use it to upgrade further when better cards are released, the 1080's price is kinda ridiculous for your application. and if history has anything to say about old gpu support from nvidia means there's not future proofing with nvidia
Thanks for all the info guys. I ended up picking up a 1070, getting ready to install it now, lets see how this mofo preforms.
