Having major issues with internet or ISP itself

Okay so im having some recent issues with my internet that did not used to be there. It keeps cutting out, massive interpolation delay in game, and went from 100mb/s to 7mb/s down. I don’t know if this is because of my ISP, since I have Spectrum, or if I did something wrong recently. I mean, I stay away from the big green download buttons, don’t go to innocuous porn sites, and I scan almost anything I download. I ran tracert and got this:

C:\Windows\system32>tracert 196.168.1.1

Trace complete.

Don’t know if this helps at all, I just want to know if there’s anything I can do on my end, or if this is all my ISP’s responsibility. I have the standard Aries Modem and a Sagemcom Fast5260 router.

Why trace 196.168.1.1? is there a particular reason?
Unless that’s where some particular game servers are?

That’s home. From what I understand, I can see what IPs are being routed through my router when I use the home IP. Im more of a hardware/software guy, so im not too sure. I know a very small amount of networking.

Home like 127.0.0.1?

[edit, re-read your comment…nah, 192.168.1.1 is you router. 196.168.1.1 is somewhere in Tongo…]

Oh crap I didn’t even notice lol. God I feel like a moron… I cant even use that as a reliable trace.

I’d be surprised if traceroute gave more than a oneliner to your own router…

What im trying to do is see if there are any outside addresses that might be causing some issues. And advice?

first of all, try giving the router a re-boot, in case it’s got overwhelmed, then I would watch YouTube for a while, checking the “stats for nerds” bit, with the connection speed.

not perfect, but if you check every now and then, can see if it has big dips and gains, in a passive way that you can enjoy the vid while probing stream health?

outside addresses? Nope, don’t know what you mean

You could check the logs on your router’s firewall and see if it’s getting spammed by traffic?

and change the DNS on your PC away from ISP supplied one to a sane one like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8

I can watch videos fine and all that, its mainly when I try to play all games. What I mean is, I was thinking that there might be something using one of the devices on my network as a remote miner due to some sort of virus. May be a long shot but, I was thinking that it MAY be part of the issue. We have tried resetting the router multiple times as well. One of the issues I am facing is that its some off brand router so I cant access the settings with normal means. It takes me to some GUI that Spectrum as made for the settings. I dont know the password and neither does my sister. Also, I do not know how to change dns, haha.

I would also like to mention that I monitor glasswire while doing all this, and it seems like everything is all normal. That’s why i’m baffled.

Dunno how they do it there, but there’s a factory default password on the back of most routers here in the UK?
just hold the power button long enough to reset to factory…

Okay, some device being a zombie on your network might be hogging your bandwidth, but without getting into the router’s GUI, or using a seperate firewall, not sure how you’d check…

You might try Zenmap/Nmap to see what devices are connected to your LAN, then switch off a couple at a time to see if you can find the cuplrit, but might take a while to tell?

Or your router may have a rout kit, and be pwned, in which case… RIP [sorry]

https://nmap.org/download.html

Doesn’t Glasswire only check outbound traffic on the local system [i.e. only your computer]

Ill give it a shot and hope that I dont have a rout kit, haha

I was under the impression that it checked incoming as well.

On the wild outside chance it was the router, and if you are renting it from the ISP, I would say “I accidentally spilt milk on it, and now it keeps overheating and needs to be replaced.”

If your supposed to get 100Mbps (160 is the closet they advertise?) then your probably using all their lines (e.g. their fibre lines to the home not on openreach copper of fibre lines?), you should contact them to troubleshoot the line first if your getting that kind of degradation.

We contacted them and they sent a boi to the house. He said that there might be issues with the line, so that might be the cause. I mean, seeing as this happened out of nowhere, I guess that could be the issue. But after I changed from a local ISP to Spectrum, I lost connection durability so i’m not inclined to believe them.

What are they doing about it? Sounds like they are taking responsibility for it being a line problem. If that’s the case there’s nothing you can do but get them to fix it.

Maybe im just being paranoid about their qos. They said that they’re gonna send another boi to fix the line at some point, so I guess I’ll wait. But its been going on even before this, and im not so sure a bad line would cause such bad connection wile connected. I was just told most of this (about the boi coming to the house and saying the lines are fucked) just recently by my sister so I guess this post is redundant now. Sorry to waste everyone’s time. I would still like some advice to keep my connection at it’s peak if you all have any to spare. Also, I will keep this post updated with progress so I can still get some answers if this turns out to not be the issue.
