Haswell Refresh i7 and H87 Compatibility?

I've recently bought an i7 4790 and I've had a Gigabyte H87-HD3 for a while, I've heard that they are compatible but only once there is a bios update. I assume it won't work because the motherboard has not been updated?
*Correct me if I'm wrong* So I won't be able to use the 4790 because the motherboard does not support the cpu without the update and I won't be able to update because the motherboard will not recognize it?

As you can probably tell I'm a bit of a noob... I assumed it would work out of the box because it uses the same socket as Haswell.

I'm trying to avoid sending it back, and money is tight at the moment so getting a new motherboard isn't really an option.

To rephrase what I'm asking if that didn't quite make sense, will they both work out of the box and if not why not?

Thanks.

On the producer's website it states that in order to run your 4790 it will need the f8 version of the BIOS, which in the case the mobo doesn't come out of the box with it you will need a supported CPU first so you can actually turn the computer ON and update the BIOS. Your best chance is to go to the store where you bought it and explain them the situation, they should be able to help you or ask a friend (don't forget about the thermal paste). It's a pain in the ass I know, higher end mobos have smart BIOS flashing functions that enable the user to update the bios without actually turning the PC on.

I bought them online, so going into a shop isn't really an option. I think I'll try and trade it for a 4770, see what they say, and if not, I guess I'll just buy a pentium to update the bios.
Thanks for the response (:
