Parts list so far: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/wazaus/saved/3SIb
The memory I have listed will need to be changed. Do you guys think its worth the extra money to go for 1866 over the 1600? I would like to keep the memory budget to around AUD $200 give or take.
I was looking at these options (keep in mind the Noctua NH-D14 cooler) : - (other recommendations needed)
I am also indecisive about the Motherboard I am looking to try and over clock the CPU so do you think the ASUS Maximus VI Hero Motherboard @ $305 is worth the extra cash for the better power phase etc? Or just save the cash? (Other Asus model suggestions are welcome consider the Z87-PRO base)
Okay so this is a gaming build yes? You don't need a 4770k. If you are just gaming the i5 4670k will be way more than adequate, especially with an overclock. That should save you a bit of cash.
The cooler and motherboard you have look good. I really don't think it is worth shelling out the extra money on the Hero. The one you have is very good and will overclock well. Unless there is some feature you desperately want I'd save the money.
As for RAM. There is no reason to spend more money to get faster RAM. 1333Mhz or 2400Mhz in game it won't make any difference. Also, if you are just gaming 8GB will be plenty. Just go with whatever is cheapest. As long as it is from a brand you heard of it will be fine.
I have a Corsair RM series PSU and it is great. Nice and stable and incredibly quiet as most of the time the fan doesn't even spin so I'd go with that one.
I noticed you only have an SSD for storage? Unless you have some drives or an external I'd grab a WD 1TB drive.
For the monitor. Ehhh. What resolutions do you want to play at? 1080p looks good enough for me and for most people but 1440p can be gorgeous. IDK how the shipping works but if you are going 1440p look for a Korean monitor. A Shimian or an XStar. On ebay they are relatively cheap. Around $330 USD I don't know how the price would change for you in Australia though. The Asus will prob be fine though for your needs.
Thanks for the input. You are correct I forgot about the marginal difference when gaming between the i7 and i5.
I have put the money towards the 4GB 770.
I have decided on the Vengeance LP 8GB Kit instead of 16GB and purchased the 256GB ssd instead. I know I will need the extra space.
The reason I don't have any mechanical drives is because I run a Freenas server plenty of storage and bandwidth for transferring files and streaming.
Im going to go with the Dell. If I am not happy with it I can offload it to the fiancé who is in the market for a new screen :D Somehow I doubt I will not be happy and more than likely will end up getting another for her anyway.
I saw on the Tek a while back on the 1440 Korean monitors but I just hate dealing with brands from overseas and especially hate dealing with Ebay. The Dell has next business day replacement 3 year warranty.
Thanks for the help Will definitely be posting build pics etc once I get the system tomorrow!
Rather than get dual channel memory, maybe look at quad channel memory (the performance increase will be small though).
Don't get a 4 GB 770 unless you plan on 4K gaming or using lots of mods/texture packs in games. Either upgrade to a 780, wait for the GTX 800 series or maybe consider an AMD R9 card.
If you choose a 1440p monitor, I would recommend Shimian or X-Star.
Thanks Guys, I will probably hit up skyrim hard with mods so the card will help I guess. I wanted to go with Asus for the graphics card and the 780 was out of the price range.
The ASUS cards are nice. My 680 is pretty quiet and I live up in the tropics so it's between 27-32°C(ambient) all the time. I love that they come with backplates, something that I feel should be standard on all large cards.
