Has anyone installed linux on surface 3 (non pro)?

The intel atom, 128 GB SSD ,4 GB RAM surface 3 @ 600$ looks pretty awesome, except for windows RT of course. I love the size of it for a laptop replacement, currently I am using my dads 2008 latitude d series laptop at class, which is so big.

I saw someone on the release thread commenting that the hardware looks like it would run great on linux, but has anyone tried to install it and has been using it yet? and if so, how is it working with linux? and have you used the magnetic keyboard with it?

I really would love to get this for its size, just to take to class for notes and to work to mess around with.

Microsoft did away with the RT version of windows. This is the reason why the Surface 3 is such a viable option as of now.
It has normal retail Windows 8.1. The Intel Atom processors are also x86 comparable.

Oh i did not know that, but I also heard that linux was not fully optimized and not exactly smooth on the 2nd surface pro, and thats why i was wondering if anyone has tried it yet

yeah i did see a couple things with the surface 3 pro, but was wondering more on the regular 3 because of different hardware

Hopefully it will have a full 64 bit UEFI. That was one of the main reasons why the Baytrail tables Dell Venue 8 Pro had a hard, or nearly impossible time installing any distros on it since it lacked a 64 bit UEFI that is required to install any distro.
I am not sure if anyone was able to get anything for that tablet.
I wait and see and be absolutely sure the Surface 3 has a 64 bit UEFI.

I installed it on the original Surface Pro. Worked great until 15.04 came out. I am pretty sure Linux would support the Atom chips. I'm just not sure exactly what kind of BiOS the Surface 3 has. But, I would imagine you could do it.
