Has anyone gotten a Linux guest to work with a 5700 XT?

So I have a server that I use as a desktop, and before I was using a 1660s as my pass through card which worked, but I wanted something better. I got a 5700 XT which was a pain to get working in Windows, but I have gotten it working after a few hours of digging.

Anyways, I use Proxmox as my host OS, but for the life of me cannot figure out why the card refuses to work in a Linux guest. I have tried Manjaro and Ubuntu, both the latest versions at the time of writing. I did apply the reset bug patch. Like I said I’ve gotten it working in Windows which tells me the host configuration is correct.

Xserver logs say something to the effect of

[AMDGPU] xxx has no monitor section
for all the outputs on the card.

I also see

amdgpu_device_ip_init failed
Fatal error during GPU init.

I’ve at least gotten windows working, but I’m a bit lost as to if I am missing something.

i have an RX 5700 (not XT) working as a Linux guest.
im using qemu-KVM and the host is running debian 10 Buster.
the guest is running Debian 11 (testing/Bullseye).

Rip this. For some reason I read the question for windows guest, my bad.

These are the errors on the host I am getting ONLY with a Linux guest. If I reboot, I can get a login screen on an Ubuntu guest once, and when I try and log in x crashes and I’m set back to the log in screen. I should also add, I can reboot a windows guest as much as I want, but I use a linux guest, shutdown then boot into windows, or reboot into the Linux guest again, I get the above errors. Seems like the reset bug? The below logs are after a reboot and first boot into a Linux guest. The errors are the same for Ubuntu and manjaro.

Guest logs after a reboot and not getting the above errors:

Solved!!!

This seemingly is a strange error with “reusing” a Linux virtual machine with a new graphics card. After trying a RTX 2060 and having the exact same issue, I learned that the issue was not with the 5700 XT, but with the host OS.

Anyways, the solution was to delete the virtual machine and recreate it, simple as that. Can’t believe I didn’t try that sooner, reason being was that installing the new card within windows 10 worked just fine, I didn’t have to recreate that virtual machine. Hopefully someone finds this information useful.

Do be aware if it’s a Windows VM, you’re changing your UUID so it could cause Windows KMS issues. (product key management service)
