Hardware recommendations for modern rack server

I am currently researching the options for a rack server (barebone). It’s main purposes will be homelab, virtualization and backup related.

My requirements for a system are the following:

  • BMC/IPMI (SOL/Console redirection is a plus)
  • Support for full size GPUs
  • PCIe bifurcation
  • Support for ReBAR
  • 1-2U
  • U.2/U.3 front bays
  • Less than 150W idle power consumption

Looking at the current market 4th gen AMD Epyc seems like a reasonable option.

After some digging I found a pretty promising looking system: Asus RS500A-E12-RS4U

Sadly I couldn’t find any reviews about this or similar barebones.
Does anyone have experience with servers from Asus?
Can you share recommendations that are somewhat similar to my requirements?

Regarding experience with Asus Server stuff:

I have a P13R-E/10G-2T motherboard from them. It’s for the Xeon-E 2400 platform. The BMC is quiet nice, build quality is good, BIOS menu is okay (but could be platform related). It’s the only board with BMC, dual M.2, 10GbE and lots of PCIe slots in a reasonable link configuration in that performance bracket. No other Xeon E-2400/AM5 boards have that feature set.
What’s not so nice: ASPM doesn’t work. The board is available in Germany since November last year and the BIOS is from May. The microcode in the BIOS is therefore from before the Intel Microcode flood, luckily I run Linux which can load a current microcode on boot.
Since late November I have a case open, since last friday the support was finally able to confirm the issue. The case is now escalated to R&D, I hope it gets some traction now.
But I also know I’m not a business, nor have I bought 2000 systems.

Would I buy Asus again? Don’t know yet, depends on how the case continues to evolve. Is ASPM working on the other boards of that platform? I’ll definitely have a look at their BIOS updates once one is release for my board.
At least the support person is very helpful, ordered the same parts to recreate the issue and we both speak our native language which made communication easy.
So far I had no other issues with the board.
